Right Wing Republicans Need a Course in How to Govern

Republicans advocating for shutting down the US government are horrible people who have no sense of patriotism. These right wing crazy ideologues zealously believe they must entrench themselves in intractable opposition to anything progressive, regardless of how their regressive positions harm people.

All of Congress takes an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, but Republicans appear to be enchanted by their ego rather than caring for the people they represent. Congress does not just represent the people who voted for them. Rather, Congress represents all Americans.  

Here's a primer for Republicans who don't
understand what it means to be patriotic:

1.  patriotism:  
devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty

2.  patriot
a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion

3.  treason
the offense of acting to overthrow one's government

4.  sedition
incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government

5.  anarchy
a state of society without government or law

The above are not complicated, but Republicans seem to prefer ignoring the first two bullets and, by default, are complicit with lessons 3, 4 and 5.

Rather than support hard working people who rely on government for leadership, right wing Republicans want to do what they were unable to accomplish in 2012, when Governor Romney lost the Republican election. President Obama won the 2012 election by a wide margin. From the moment of Obama's victory, Republicans wormed their way into figuring out how to upset the outcome of the Obama victory.

Since the Republican caucus is now controlled by a minority of right wing zealots, it seems to me they should be guilty as charged of being unpatriotic and falling into seditious behavior.

This irresponsible behavior must be punished.  

Meanwhile, all Republicans should be required to write one thousand times on the Congressional blackboard:

I was elected to represent all the people in "We the People".
I was elected to represent all the people in "We the People"
I was elected to represent all the people in "We the People"

This tragic melodrama of governing by shutting down government is evidence of "dunce cap" politics. It must be remedied by replacing everybody who votes on regressive and seditious legislation.

Republicans Wasting Money Denigrates our Nation's Democracy

Americans are in a crisis of Democracy right now. There's a political party inside of the Republicans who want to upend our government as we know it, says Ed Shultz of The Ed Show on MSNBC.

Americans have lots of freedoms, but there are no options about how Democracy works.

Democracy means the majority decides issues. Democracy also allows those who don't agree with the outcome of a democratic vote to return and try again.  Meanwhile, the majority rules. There's no ambiguity about this simple basis of Democracy. Majority rules.

In a Democracy, one legislative house of one branch of government is not a majority, by any measure. In other words, House Speaker Boehner leads a minority.

Therefore, those who are in the minority must obey the law.

That's how Democracy is supposed to work.

Instead, right now. in the democratic USA, a minority in the Republican party, a right wing fringe called the Tea Party (not even a registered political party), insists on closing government because they happen to disapprove of the duly voted and ratified health care reform law, called Obamacare.  

Unfortunately, Republicans who are intent on closing down government because of their obsession with health care reform, would rather waste tax payer time, money and our nation's credibility as a Democracy rather than keep our government operational.  They're obsessed with one legal law. 

Suppose Democrats insist on shutting down government because many of us don't happen to like the freedoms provided in Second Amendment guns rights?  Well....
we sure won't go there.....

This tragically looming government shutdown is outrageous and, in my opinion, an illegal act incited by right wing extremists. Their intransigent position is actually breaking the law and, therefore, it's sedition.  

All Republicans complicit in this government shut down, for the sake of crazy ideology, should be punished by the laws forbidding sedition, and incitement of discontent or rebellion against government. This continued behavior will eventually be labeled as treason and the Republican Party will be punished for leading this irresponsible and unpatriotic insanity. 

In past centuries, minority fringe groups of people who engaged in subversive activities wound up in a bad way.

In a Democracy, sedition is punished by striping away the citizenship of those who are guilty. 

Of course, even a potential curtailment of right wing extremism would cost tax payer money but, in so doing, it might be an investment. Removing the citizenship of seditious Tea Party extremists could save Democracy from the anarchy.  

And the morale of this blog is this:  It's called sedition when elected lawmakers in Congress support initiatives that will shut down government and break the law.

Bill Clinton: Call Bluff of 'Spiteful' Republicans

Former President Bill Clinton, whose Democratic administration was the last to experience a partial government shutdown in 1996, advised President Barack Obama not to negotiate with Republicans on the eve of another shutdown. 

It's Republicans who are making unlawful demands. They want to hold the US government hostage because they don't want to obey the health care reform law.

Democrats can't get sucked into a political hostage situation to repeal of the health care reform law, just because selfish right wing Republicans don't happen to like it. Obamacare is already a law. There's lots of other laws we don't like. Gee, I'd like to see Congress amend Second Amendment gun rights laws. Maybe, Congress should close the government down until the Second Amendment is modified to require stronger background checks for those who buy automatic weapons. 

Obviously, Congressional right wing Republicans would rather deprive Americans of access to affordable health insurance than to protect us from preventable gun violence. But, nobody I know is willing to shut down the government to protect about 30,000 preventable gun violence deaths a year (tragically) by modifying the Second Amendment. 

So, why do Republicans want to drive the government into shut down because they don't like the health care reform aka "Obamacare". The only reason for this spiteful behavior is horribly simple. It's because right wing Republicans don't want to support anything proposed by President Obama. Period. In all honesty, if the health care reform law were called "Reagancare" rather than "Obamacare", we'd likely be talking about the law's virtues rather than any potential faults.

Moreover, a majority of Americans don't want to hold the US government hostage to a shut down to repeal the health care reform law. Even Tea Party right wing Senator Cruz agrees that Americans want to uphold the Obamacare law.  

As per the Meet the Press transcript of Sunday September 29th,  Senator Cruz said, "We look at the phrasing....'Uphold this law?' I promise you, if you do any poll on, 'Do you want to uphold this law,' (and) the answer is always yes."

Nevertheless, speaking out of both sides of his mouth, Senator Cruz says Americans don't want Obamacare. Nevertheless, Senator Cruz hasn't asked people in Massachusetts if they like their version of Obamacare, where it's been implemented since 2006.

President Clinton has some good advice:

“I think there are times when you have to call people’s bluff,” Clinton said in an interview with ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” adding that he thought Republican tactics to undermine the 2010 Affordable Care Act seem “almost spiteful.”

Controlling our government with spiteful behavior is incompetent leadership.

Obviously, Republicans must be voted out of office. Their bully tactics can no longer be tolerated, because they're using this methodology to drag our nation into destructive political acrimony.

Our US is a nation of laws. Obamacare is a law. Congressional Republicans are elected to uphold the nation's laws. 

Republicans must stop being spiteful and driven by obsession to repeal Obamacare. They must learn how to govern. It's what they're paid by us the taxpayers, to do. It's called leadership. If they can't do it, they must be fired.

President Obama Must Stand Up for The People Who Elected Him - Congressional Right Wingers Must Stand Down

Our United States Congress was on paid vacation for most of the summer of 2013, knowing full well about the financial crises looming in our federal government. Yet, they procrastinated.

Every one knew about the need to vote to pay for government, in a continuing resolution beyond October 1st, when the fiscal year ends. They also knew about the crucial raising of the nation's debt ceiling. Nevertheless, as the clock ticked away like a flashback from the Tell-Tale-Heart horror story by Edgar Allen Poe, the Congress started frantically holding late night sessions throughout the weekend while television pundits created melodrama about whether or not the essential work of government would get done.

Meanwhile, regardless of political ideology, Americans are frustrated beyond words because we simply can't fathom where Congress gets the authority to hold government hostage, because a minority of right wing zealots don't happen to like the federal health care reform law aka "Obamacare".  It's a standoff.  

Trying to find a solution is like trying to find the source of the relentless heartbeat in the Tell Tale Heart. Only a few people seem to get how to solve this stupid power struggle over Obamacare.

This is how it gets resolved:  Congress pledges to uphold the law. Obamasare is the law. Congress, therefore, needs to do its job and fund government to support the implementation of all laws.



In Edgar Allen Poe's short horror story, a delusional killer is haunted by the evidence of his deed when the heart of a murder victim keeps beating, even after the body is buried behind a wall. Eventually, the delusional killer is driven to confess, because of the madness caused by the hidden sound of the beating heart. The  madness, of course, is in the fact that there was no "beating heart".

Republicans who hold fast to destroying health care reform are acting like the delusional protagonist in Tell Tale Heart. They're professing an obsessive mantra about how health care reform will irreparably harm civilization as we know it, but, at the same time, reassuring constituents how certain provisions of Obamacare will not be repealed! They're supporting coverage for preexisting conditions and for children remaining on their parents health plans until they turn 26 years old. Yet, at the same time, they're listening to a delusional Tell Tale Heart drone of doom, even threatening to close down government, to prevent Obamacare's implementation. Incredibly, there's not a shred of evidence to support any of their delusional horror predictions. 

As a matter of fact, there's a better than 50/50 chance that none of their Tell Tale Heart delusions are factual.

Therefore, President Obama must put an end to this horror story. Americans need to hear from the President we elected. He must stand firm to support and uphold the Federal Health Care Reform law as it was passed by the people's Congress and upheld as Constitutonal by the US Surpreme Court. It's unlawful for Congress to hold a federal law hostage, just to be spiteful.

Republicans are delusional enough to think they might get away with shutting down government because they don't happen to like health care reform. Well, they're about to be fire by the American people for not doing the job they're elected to do, which is to keep government open.

Meanwhile, President Obama must continue to stand against a government shut down, regardless of the the pressure to unfund or delay health care reform. No president, not now or in the future, should endure this breech of duty by Congress, especially when it's about a law whereby millions of people will be able to afford to buy health insurance.

A Solution to Obsessive Congressional Gridlock - Bring Independent Voters Into Primary Elections

"...old political institutions and categories are becoming irrelevant—even repugnant—to many Americans." 

Americans are wringing our hands in political desperation, tying in vain to understand how our elected Congress can act so irresponsibly in the face of a national budget crises. 

Here's the root cause of the trouble: Republicans in the Congress won't pass a budget bill unless President Obama's Health Care Reform Act is unfunded. In other words, Congressional Republicans won't uphold the Federal Health Care Reform Law, upheld as Constitutional by the US Supreme Court. Instead, the GOP prefers to hold the entire US government hostage to this obsession with unfunding health care reform, aka "Obamacare", regardless of how many innocent people are harmed. 

How did our government get to this horrible political stalemate? 

It happened because primary elections, where political candidates are selected to run for office by party faithful, are exclusive of the Independent voters. In other words, only partisan voters select the candidates who run for office. Therefore, winning candidates are beholding to the small number of primary voters who make their nominations and elections possible. As a result, American politics is highly polarized between Democrats and Republicans, because Independent voters are largely excluded from the primary process. 

Yet, there's a way to solve this polarization by creating a truly democratic primary process where Independent voters are included in the primary process. Political expert Jackie Salit is leading a national effort to change the status quo of the nation's primary election process and she'll be in Maine on Sept. 30th.

Jackie Salit will be in Maine on September 30th.  Hopefully, I'll meet her at the Bangor Rotary's lunch meeting on October 1st.

Salit's influence must change the status quo of political elections by opening all elections to every registered voter without regard for political party affiliation.

The event is expected to be livestreamed and videoed for future viewing.

Extremist Republicans Must Tell Their Right Wing Constituents to Fly

There comes a point in all standoffs where one side or the other finally realizes the futility of their cause. A standoff resolution, typically, has little to do with who is right or wrong but, rather, coming to a realization that the juice isn't worth the squeeze, anymore. In the current Washington DC Congressional standoff, Republicans are "squeezing away" with anguish about the October 1st implementation of Obamacare. They think shutting down the government, like a child holding its breath, will get them their way, just because they don't like the health care reform law.  


Hopefully, Republicans might be running out of juice, because polls report that Americans do not want the government to shut down to prevent Obamacare from being implemented.

NPR reports a new poll released Tuesday shows that a clear majority of Americans want Congress to keep the federal government operating and deal with President Obama's health care law separately. It makes good sense to create legislation to expedite and move forward with providing Americans access to affordable health insurance. On the other hand, it makes no sense, whatsoever, to postpone or prevent Obamacare from taking effect. If something is wrong with the law, then fix it; but, don't hold the government hostage because a minority of people don't like some of it.

According to a United Technologies/National Journal poll taken Sept. 19-22, 63 percent of respondents — and 51 percent of Republicans — said Congress should provide the funding necessary to keep the government open, rather than shut it down in an attempt to defund Obamacare.
In other words, right wing Republicans are wasting time and money trying to break up the federal health care reform law - the Affordable Care Act aka "Obamacare". These minority politicians are relentlessly engaged in a futile quest. Instead of doing the job Americans sent Congressional lawmakers to Washington DC to do, right wingers have become marionettes to Tea Party extremists. 

It's sincerely time for right wing extremists to take flight. They must end their siege on Congress. Lawmakers must do their job without the undue influence of ideologues, who are driven like suicidal lemmings, to shut down government.

In fact 51 percent of Republicans don't even agree with the extremist position of shutting down government to unfund Obamacare. (In my opinion, shutting down the US government for any reason should be unconstitutional.)  

Therefore, right wingers like House Speaker John Boehner and Texas Senator Ted Cruz must inform their right wing handlers that the budget standoff must be resolved. They need to let go of their demands to unfund Obamacare.

It's time right wingers take flight and lift off the backs of Congress, so that government can get back to caring about the needs of the majority of Americans. It's middle class Americans, by the way, who pay the salaries, and health insurance benefits for those in Congress who are causing this unnecessary and wasteful obstruction. Boehner, and Cruz must be lifted out of office and forced to seek real jobs, where they will be in a position to pay for their own health insurance. 

This current stupid stand off over Obamacare should cause enough political turbulence to launch right wing politicians out of Congress in the next election, if not sooner.

Inevitably, right wing extremists will eventually run out of juice and so will the radical voters who control them.

Republicans Need to Serve in the Military Before Holding Servicemen's Pay Hostage to Misguided Ideology

Texas Senator Ted Cruz never served in the US Military. Nevertheless, his right wing Tea Party misguided political ideology is holding hostage our nation's military pay. He's taking this terrible anti military position because he doesn't agree with implementing the federal Health Care Reform law. Shutting down government will freeze military pay, for the sake of not implementing a duly passed heath care reform law. Meanwhile, Texas has much to gain from health care reform, because the state has the highest percentage of uninsured people in the nation. Health care reform, aka "Obamacare" will offer Cruz's constituents the opportunity to finally buy affordable coverage.

How to solve getting the military paid, now and in the future?

It's simple. All US legislators, especially those who serve in the federal government, should be required to serve in the US Military. Like magic. Presto! Serving in the military will teach our lawmakers how vitally important it is for the military to be paid. It's horribly wrong to withhold military paychecks, because it's families that truly suffer. Military personnel don't live in a cocoon. They have families to support. Freezing military pay hurts the families of our nation's defenders.

Incredibly, first person accounts written by US Navy Seals tell how they carry money on their persons to pay off informants and to help bribe clandestine operations.So, how is it these same heroic Seals are now at risk for not being paid, because right wing Republicans in Congress don't like Obamacare? Let me get this straight. Navy Seals can pay informants but can't, themselves, get paid? Oh paleeze! Obstructionist Republicans who hold military pay hostage are stupid and unpatriotic. 

Worse, to a right wing person, these extremists are unqualified to hold military pay hostage, because they happen to hold an ideological opposition to the federal health care reform law. Right wing Republican obstructionists, like Senator Ted Cruz and his Tea Party followers, have never put on a uniform to serve our country. It should be against federal law for anyone who never served in the US armed forces to hold hostage military salaries.

Senator Cruz and his misguided political ideology must be cruised out to sea. He and his extremist followers should be re-settled on some remote island where they can do no more harm to our nation with their extremism. 

All military personnel should promptly be paid. Nobody, especially Senator Cruz, should be permitted to make unqualified judgement about the timeliness of defense department paychecks.

Republicans Must Disclose Where They Receive Health Insurance Coverage

Republicans obsessed by trying to block the Federal Law to provide health care reform and expand affordable insurance coverage for uninsured Americans, don't reveal how their own health care is paid.  Most Republicans who want to unfund health care reform in the "Obamacare" plan are beneficiaries of state of the art insurance plans.  It's likely they don't worry about paying for "pre-existing conditions", like pregnancy, or coverage for certain medications, whether or not they're listed on an approved Formulary. 

Texas is the state with the most uninsured people. Therefore, it makes virtually no sense for Texas Senator Ted Cruz to filibuster (in other words, waste tax payer time) to prevent his constituents from purchasing affordable health insurance, as provided in the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare").

It seems fair to me to request the Republicans, who insist on obstructing the implementation of health care reform, to disclose to their constituents where they receive their insurance coverage? There's a better than 50/50 chance that obstructionist Republicans, who want to block the implementation of health care reform, are receiving their own coverage from government plans.  

We don't need to ask about how Senator Cruz and his family receives health care coverage. His coverage is paid by taxpayers. 
Nevertheless, Cruz and his selfish supporters don't want taxpayers to help other people to access affordable health insurance. This is unethical and hypocritical.

It makes no sense for Republicans to deny the working poor and those who need health insurance from accessing affordable coverage, without telling us how they receive coverage.  

Republicans need to disclose to America how their health insurance is paid. More important, Republicans must let go of their obsession with health care reform and, instead, figure out how to fix what's wrong with their right wing extremist political party.  

Obviously, hypocrisy is easy to fix when people tell the truth. Unfortunately, Republicans have lost the ability to tell people the truth, or else they would reveal where they receive health insurance before trying to prevent others from the same or similar access.

President Obama Must Act Against Republican Extremism

Republicans can't possibly care about people. If they cared about people, they'd immediately stop obstructing progressive policies and begin to recommend some creative ideas to help the middle class.

Instead, right wing Republicans are consumed with a misguided ideology, driven by radicalism rather than humanism. They're paranoid about the role of government and stuck in conservative trench warfare against immigration reform, tax reform, health care reform, Second Amendment gun reform and entitlement reform.

While a Republican driven government shutdown looms, middle class Americans are watching our 401 K portfolios shrink while the stock market tries to figure out the fiscal uncertainty. Furthermore, we're worried about how the negative impact of a government shutdown will interfere with earned Social Security and Veterans Benefits. There's absolutely no need for this anguish. Our US government has plenty of money plus the ability to generate more cash through revenue sharing aka "tax reform".  Blogger DC Coder writes, "If Congress fails to fund the federal government by Oct. 1, the start of the new fiscal year, the government will go into partial shutdown. Some government functions – those deemed essential – will continue as usual, while others will be suspended. If a shutdown proceeds the way it would have in 2011 (had the last funding impasse had not been resolved in time), 800,000 of 2.1 million federal employees would be furloughed."

What don't Republicans "get" about the severity of this doomsday scenario? We're already dealing with the consequences of the stupid fiscal sequester. It's sincerely not fair to impose more hardship on Americans by shutting down government because Republicans want to cause trouble.

President Obama's intervention is essential to stop this extremism. Americans need leadership to guide us out of the polarized trenches being defended by radical extremists. Somebody must put an end to this consistent Republican obsession with government obstruction.  

Apparently, Republicans need education about how democracy works. It's like this - the person with the most votes wins the elections. Like, in 2012, President Obama and the Democrats won, because they received the majority of votes. 

But, Republicans also need to know how those who loose elections always have a chance to try to win at another time. Winning at another time means bringing forth good alternative ideas. Republicans don't have any.

Republicans seem to believe democracy only works when they win the elections. In their delusional logic, they're the only party entitled to reap the privilege of living in a Democratic government.

If Republicans sincerely understood democracy, they'd create fresh ideas to present to the American people, so they could plan to win more votes for their policies in the upcoming elections. Republicans aren't likely to win a majority of votes in future national elections while they continue to obstruct government without offering solutions to problems, other than to shut down the government.

Meanwhile, President Obama must animate his resistance to spiraling and out of control Republican obstructionism. 

Rather than soft speeches and beautiful logic, President Obama must tell Republicans how unpatriotic it is to not supporting the Federal Law passed in Obamacare and upheld as Constitutional by the US Supreme Court. He must tell Republicans how dumb it is not to raise the debt ceiling, because the money needed has already been appropriated. Holding the debt ceiling hostage to budget negotiations is like charging on a credit card to buy Christmas gifts, but not paying the bill when the invoice comes due. It's dumb.

Republican extremism must be stopped. Americans need leadership to educate voters about the value of progressive government and the dangers of continued obstructionism. 

Moreover, President Obama must take action to deliver on his campaign promise to fight for the middle class. Where is that Obama, the 2012 presidential candidate? We need him ASAP.

Ted Cruz Needs to Take a Cruise Using His Own Money - Stop Wasting Taxpayer Time and Money

When Ted Cruz talks to the empty seats in the Congress, does his noise get heard?  Regardless of who is listening (or not) he is taking up the oxygen in the room while wasting taxpayer time and money.

A fellow blogger named The Progressive Professor posted this worthy information about Strom Thurmond:

The Senate filibuster was once used, years ago, to prevent civil rights legislation, with South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond becoming infamous for the longest individual filibuster in Senate history in 1957 on that subject. Thurmond doesn't look very good in history due to his prejudiced, narrow minded stand on that topic.

Senator Rand Paul used the filibuster tactic months ago to protest drone policy on foreign soil, and a crazy fear that drones would be used against Americans on domestic soil.  (Insert Maine Writer:  Moreover, we don't know how many American lives have been saved with drone technology - read No Easy Day by pseudonym Mark Owen)

And Senator Ted Cruz is...using the filibuster to attempt to destroy ObamaCare, denying millions of Americans the opportunity to have decent health care.  (....all the while, 26 percent of his Texas constituents do not have health insurance....)

Neither Paul from months ago, and Cruz today, will change American policy, as the President will use drones only overseas, as a measure of defense and security policy against terrorists, including Americans who fight for the enemy; and ObamaCare will proceed, no matter what Cruz says or does.

(As a matter of fact, popular provisions in the Obamacare law are already operational!  We can't undo what's already in place.)

But in the process, only the loonies on the extreme right will rally to either Paul or Cruz, and the Tea Party movement may have impact in the House of Representatives and with a few Senators, but both men are self destructing before our eyes by their own words and actions! If the GOP is nuts enough to nominate either of these characters for President, they will get what they deserve, a walloping defeat in 2016!  (Here!  Here! I totally agree!)

Maine Writer- Ted Cruz needs to stop wasting tax payer money. Give him a meager severance (sell some of his Senate office furniture to pay for it) and send him on a cruise. Sail him away from those of us trying to move our nation forward with progressive policies, consistent with other civilized world nations who provide health coverage for their citizens.

Republican Alert! Government Shutdown Costs Money: Ronald Reagan Quote on Ideology

Republicans usually tremble, tremble, tremble at the mention of President Ronald Reagan.

Okay, Republican ideologues, how do you justify sacrificing our US government operations, the "mother" of our nation, for the sake of your minority opinion ideologies (there are too many to mention)?

Honestly, I don't know whether to be angry at the Republicans or at the American people, in general, for putting up with idiots who somehow get elected to Congress and then want to shove their right wing ideology down our throats. Now, these obsessed politicians want to dismantle our government. 

Hello? Our US Constitution wasn't written to fly in the face of voters only when right wing zealots want to protect Second Amendment gun rights!

Congress is supposed to to support all the laws.

Now, a minority of right wing Congressional Republicans are intent, like Kamikaze Pilots, to shut down our government, rather than to uphold the law passed in health care reform. In my mind, this is seditious behavior and they should be punished.

Moreover, Republicans have shamefully failed arithmetic, yet again. GOP right wing zealots are earning their labels as the "stupid party" by continuing to act dumb, because shutting down government wastes money. By the way, the GOP doesn't deserve to be called Grand Old Party, anymore. They've earned the title of Grumpy Old Party, instead. They want to shut down government, harming hard working people as a result, just because they can. They're the spoiled bully thugs hiding behind their mommies skirts in the school yard. Their "mommies" are House Speaker John Boehner, a puppet of the Tea-Party and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Surely, these idiots must not understand how much their zealotry is costing taxpayers. "Wonklblog" pundit Ezra Klein and others are reporting how the suicidal launch to obstruct government, by shutting it down to prevent implementation of Obamacare (health care reform) will cost taxpayers billions of wasted dollars.

To understand what Congress is risking every time it nears a shutdown, consider what the past ones have cost. In 1996, the Office of Management and Budget tallied the two major shutdowns of the decade at about $1.4 billion. Adjusting for inflation would bring that total to more than $2 billion in today’s dollars.But as an analysis (pdf) by Roy Meyers, a political scientist at the University of Maryland, found, that estimate left out a lot. It didn’t account for the lost value of work that wasn’t done or the $300 million the federal parks would have taken in or the reduced pace of IRS audits. And then there are the less visible consequences. Meyers suggests that contractors might start charging the government a premium after shutdowns to compensate for the uncertainty of their payments. And a large body of work shows that unstable budget processes at the state level raise borrowing costs, meaning some of the costs are permanent, or at least long-lived.

Even getting near a shutdown costs money. The government must prepare, and that means a lot of hours spent on nothing useful. “You have to pull people off whatever they’re doing to inform employees about what they can do and when they can come in,” said Stan Collender, a budget expert at Qorvis communications. “You have to prepare to change the Web sites with new information about what to do during the shutdowns. You have additional security costs for the buildings because you have to lock them up so no one can get in. You have additional maintenance costs in terms of heating and cooling. And let’s say you’re a supplier who is supposed to deliver parts to the government on Oct. 2. What do you do?”

Okay, Ezra, I'll tell you what to do.

These contractors and everybody else negatively impacted by a government shut down (nearly everybody in America) must vote these stupid GOP party people out of office. If a government contractor can't deliver parts, then the person making the products obviously won't be paid, either. In my mind, that's illegal. Moreover, ask the government contractor to tell his/her suppliers to join in a rebellion, call a special election or another Constitutional Assembly in Philadelphia - (the building is still open, isn't it?) for the purpose of removing every dumb and dumber government ideologue out of office!


Even worse than being dumb is not knowing how to solve a problem. Dumb and dumber Republicans are carrying on like cats in mating season about Obamacare and the cost of government, but offer zero solutions. They're completely void of ideas. Their misplaced energy is engulfed in unfounded zealotry.


Try asking a Republican what they don't like about health care reform, aka "Obamacare" (if they'll let you get a word in edgewise) and they're likely to say they don't want anymore government run programs. Then, after they've predictably said that, ask them to tell you where they earn a living? There's a better than 50/50 chance these zealots earn money off the same government they want to shut down.

Hypocrisy 101 is a subject wheres stupid Republicans might get a passing grade.

President Obama once taught college courses in Constitutional law at the University of Chicago law school.

Surely, Obama knows how his executive leadership is essential at this time, when a government shutdown is looming, because some in Congress won't enforce the Federal Law in Obamacare. President Obama must lead Americans out of this ideological sea of right wing extremism and enforce the Obamacare law without holding government operations hostage to do so.


Meanwhile, Americans may not be able to wait for the next election to rid ourselves of seditious members of Congress who want to bring down government, because they want to break the law. They must be removed for violation of their oath of office, which is to uphold the US Constitution, including Federal Laws. Maybe, President Ronald Reagan's quote on ideology should be included in this solemn oath, presuming the dumb and stupid Republican can read, understand and remember it.

President Obama Attends a Fifth Mass Shooting Memorial of his Administraation

"Even in our sleep, pain, which we cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God."


President Obama certainly doesn't prefer for gun massacre memorial speeches to be included in his legacy, but he may have no choice. Unfortunately, he has now, eloquently, spoken passionately at five of them.

In his fifth speech following a mass shooting, President Barack Obama on Sunday mourned the loss of 12 people killed last week at Washington's Navy Yard.

The president, who spoke at memorial service at the Marine Barracks, also argued against the notion that mass gun violence is "the new normal" and called on the country to make change happen.

"Secretary Hagel, Secretary Mabus, admirals Greenert and Hilarides, Mayor Gray, leaders from across this city, and armed forces, to all the outstanding first responders, and most of all, the families whose hearts have been broken, we cannot begin to comprehend your loss. 

We know that no words we offer today are equal to the magnitude to the deaths of that loss. But we come together as a grateful nation to honor your loved ones, to grieve with you, and to offer as best we can some solace and some comfort.

Now on the night that we lost Martin Luther King Jr. to a gunman's bullet, Robert Kennedy stood before a stunned and angry crowd in Indianapolis, and he broke the terrible news.

And, in the anguish of that moment, he turned to the words an ancient Greek poet, Aeschylus 525 BC – 456 BC.

Pain, which cannot forget, drop by drop, upon the heart. The tragedy and the pain that brings us here today is extraordinary. It is unique. The lives that were taken from us were unique. The memories their loved ones carried are unique. And they will carry them and endure long after the news cameras are gone.

But part of what wears on as well is the sense that this has happened before. Part of what wears on us, what troubles us so deeply as we gather here today is how this senseless violence that took place here in the Navy Yard echoes other recent tragedies.



As president I have now grieved with five American communities ripped apart by mass violence: Fort Hood, Tucson, Aurora, Sandy Hook, and now the Washington Navy Yard.

And these mass shootings occur against a backdrop of daily tragedies as an epidemic of gun violence tears apart communities across America, from the streets of Chicago to neighborhoods not far from here.

And so once again we remember our fellow Americans who were just going about their day, doing their jobs, doing what they loved. In this case, the unheralded work that keeps our country strong and our Navy the finest fleet in the world, these patriots doing their work that they were so proud of and who have now been taken away from us by unspeakable violence.

Once more we come together to mourn the lives of beauty, and the comfort, and the wonderful families who cherished them. Once more we pay tribute to all who rush toward the danger, who risk their lives so others might live, and who are in our prayers today, including Officer Scott Williams.

Once more our hearts are broken. Once more we ask, why? Once more we seek strength and wisdom through God's grace.

You and your families, this Navy family, are still in the early hour of your grief. And I'm here today to say that there's nothing routine about this tragedy. Nothing routine about your loss. Your loved ones will not be forgotten. They'll endure in the hearts of the American people, in the hearts of the Navy that they helped to keep strong. In the hearts of their coworkers and their friends and their neighbors.

'I want them to know how she lived,' Jessica Gaarde said of her mother Kathy. 'She is not a number or some statistic.' None of these 12 fellow Americans are statistics. Today I want every American to see how these men and women lived. You may have never met them, but you know them. They're your neighbors. Like

They were the volunteers who made your community better. Frank Kohler giving dictionaries to every third grader in his county. Marty Bodrog leading the children's bible study at church.

They lived the American dream. Like
Vishnu Pandit, who left everything he knew in India for this opportunity and raised a wonderful family and dedicated himself to the United States Navy.

They were proud veterans like
Gerald Read, who wore the Army uniform for more than 25 years. And Michael Arnold, who became one of the Navy's leading architects of whom a colleague said 'nobody knew those ships like him.'

They were dedicated fathers, like
Mike Ridgell, coaching his daughters' softball teams. Joining Facebook just to keep up with his girls, one of whom said 'he was always the cool dad.'

They were loving mothers like
Mary Francis Knight, devoted to her daughters and who had just recently with joy as her older daughter got married.

They were doting grandparents like
John Johnson, always smiling, giving bear hugs to his 10 grandchildren and who would have welcomed his 11th grandchild this fall.

These are not statistics. They are the lives that have been taken from us. This is how far a single act of violence can ripple. A husband has lost his wife.

Wives have lost their husbands. Sons and daughters have lost their moms and their dads. Little children have lost their grandparents. Hundreds in our communities have lost a neighbor. Thousands here have lost a friend.

As has been mentioned for one family, the Daniels family, old wounds are ripped open again. Priscilla has lost Arthur, her husband of 30 years. Only a few years ago, as Mayor Gray indicated, another shooting took the life of their son, just 14 years old. 'I can't believe this is happening again,' Priscilla says.


These families have endured a shattering tragedy. It ought to be a shock to all of us, as a nation and as a people. It ought to obsess us. It ought to lead to some sort of transformation. That's what happened in other countries when they experienced similar tragedies.

In the United Kingdom, in Australia, when just a single mass shooting occurred in those countries, they understood there was nothing ordinary about this kind of carnage. They endured great heartbreak, but they also mobilized and they changed. And mass shootings became a great rarity.

And yet here in the United States, after the round-of-clock coverage on cable news, after the heartbreaking interviews with families, after all the speeches and all the punditry and all the commentary, nothing happens. Alongside the anguish of these American families, alongside the accumulated outrage so many of us feel, sometimes I fear there's a creeping resignation. That these tragedies are just somehow the way it is. That this is somehow the new normal.

We can't accept this. As Americans bound in grief and love, we must insist here today there's nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work. There's nothing normal about our children being gunned down in our classrooms. There's nothing normal about children dying in our streets from stray bullets.

No other advanced nation endures this kind of violence. None. Here in America, the murder rate three times what it is in other developed nations. The murder rate with guns is 10 times what it is with other developed nations. And there's nothing inevitable about it. It comes about because of decisions we make or fail to make, and it falls upon us to make it different.

Sometimes, it takes an unexpected voice to break through, to help remind us what we need know to be true. We heard one of those voices last week: Dr. Janis Orlowski's team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center treated the wounded.

And in the midst of one of her briefings, she spoke with heartbreaking honesty as somebody who sees daily and nightly, the awful carnage of so much violence. 'We are a great country,' she said. 'But there's something wrong. All these shootings, all these victims,' she said. 'This is not America. It is a challenge to all of us,' she said. 'And we have to work together to get rid of this.'
That's the wisdom we should be taking away from this tragedy and so many others. Not accepting these shootings as inevitable, but asking what can we do to prevent them from happening again and again and again. I've said before, we cannot stop every act of senseless violence. We cannot know every evil that lurks in troubled minds. But if we can prevent even one tragedy like this, save even one life, spare other families what these families are going through, surely we've got an obligation to try.

It's true that each of the tragedies I've mentioned is different, and in this case it's clear we need to do a better job of securing our military facilities, deciding who gets access to them. As commander in chief, I've ordered a review of procedures up and down the chain. And I know that Secretary Hagel is moving aggressively on that. As a society, it's clear we've got to do a better job of ensuring that those who need mental health care actually get it. And that in those efforts, we don't stigmatize those who need help. Those things are clear, and we've got to move to address them.

But we Americans are not inherently a more violent people than folks are in other countries. We're not inherently prone to mental health problems. The main difference that sets our nation apart, what makes us so susceptible to so many mass shootings is that we don't do enough, we don't take the basic common sense actions to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. What's different in America is it's easy to get your hands on a gun.
And a lot of us know this. But the politics are different, as we saw again this spring. And that's sometimes where the resignation comes from-the sense that our politics are frozen and that nothing will change.

Well, I cannot accept that. I do not accept that we cannot find a common sense way to preserve our traditions, including our basic Second Amendment freedoms and the rights of law abiding gun owners, while at the same time reducing the gun violence that unleashes so much mayhem on a regular basis.

It may not happen tomorrow and it may not happen next week. It may not happen next month. But it will happen, because it's the change that we need. And it's a change overwhelmingly supported by the majority of Americans.

By now, though, it should be clear that the change we need will not come from Washington, even when tragedy strikes Washington. Change will come the only way it has come and that's from the American people.

So the question now is not whether as Americans we care in moments of tragedy. Clearly, we care. Our hearts are broken again. We care so deeply about these families. The question is do we care enough, do we care enough to keep standing up for the country that we know is possible even though it's hard and even if it's politically uncomfortable?

Do we care enough to sustain the passion and the pressure to make our communities safer and our country safer? Do we care enough to do everything we can to spare other families the pain that is felt here today?

Our tears are not enough. Our words and our prayers are not enough. If we really want to honor these 12 men and women, if we really want to be country where we can go to work and go to school and walk our streets free from senseless violence without so many lives being stolen by a bullet from a gun, then we're going to have to change. We're going to have to change.

On Monday morning, these 12 men and women woke up like they did every day. They left home and they headed off to work. General Read's wife Cathy said, "See you tonight for dinner." And John Johnson looked at his wife, Judy, and said what he always said whenever they parted. "Good-bye, beautiful. I love you so much."

Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop-by-drop upon the heart, until in our own despair, against our will comes wisdom through the awful grace of God. What Robert Kennedy understood. What Dr. King understood, what all our great leaders have always understood is that wisdom does not come from tragedy alone or from some sense of resignation in the fallibility of man. Wisdom comes through the recognition that tragedies, such as this, are not inevitable. And that we possess the ability to act and to change and to spare others the pain that drops upon our hearts.

So in our grief, let us seek that grace. Let us find that wisdom. In doing so, let us truly honor these 12 American patriots. May God hold close the souls taken from us and grant them eternal peace. May he comfort and watch over these families, and may God grant us the strength and wisdom to keep safe our United States of America."

Nairobi- A Root Cause Analysis from Afar

It's not rocket science to figure out the root cause of the tragic Nairobi Kenya Westgate Mall massacre and hostage standoff.  There are three root causes: (a) Terrorism hasn't been declared to be an international war (only a handful of countries are seriously engaged in fighting against it); and (b) Terrorists get access to a seemingly inexhaustible supply of weapons (it's just a matter of time when these weapons become missiles and worse); and (c) Money - somebody is funding terrorists and their evil activities.

CNN reports: Gunfire echoed from the (Westgate, Nairobi) mall sporadically during the day, sending journalists and aid workers scrambling for cover. Thick heavy smoke -- from a fire set by terrorists, according to Kenyan authorities -- billowed into the air much of the afternoon.CNN reports

Trying to stop international terrorism shouldn't be complicated, but it does require international cooperation. The solution is actually something like taking a Student Achievement Test (SAT). The problem reads something like this:

If a group of evil people are looking to reign terror on innocent civilians, they must first do which of the following:

1.  find money
2.  find a method to deliver the terror to the civilian group
3.  find a group of unsuspecting civilians to surprise with terrorism
4.  find a way to access a civilian site to perpetrate terrorism
5.  find all of the above
6.  find none of the above
7.  find (1) and (3)

Obviously, the only wrong answer is # 6.

In a logical root cause analysis, the road to a solution to the growing international terrorism problem is to do the following:  

1.  cut off terrorist money at the source
2.  cut the access of military arms from finding their way into the hands of civilian vigilante and cultist groups

Answers 1 and 2 to the root cause analysis are synergistic, because  money fuels terrorism like gasoline feeds fires.
Terrorism thrives on money.  

So, who's supplying the money to fund terrorism? Apparently, whatever the source, terrorism money isn't constrained by operating under the confines of a "stupid sequester", like the US has self imposed for no rational reason. Nevertheless, the terrorist money source has, seemingly, unlimited access to funds.

It's too easy an academic solution to impose on terrorist prone countries, like Kenya, to suggest we simply cut off money to eliminate access to weapons and, thereby, eliminate the violence of terrorist groups. Certainly, a multiple choice solution isn't feasible, unless the world declares war on international terror, by cutting violent groups from access to money to buy weapons. 

Therefore, the solution to eliminating the evil and growing plight of terrorism throughout the world is to have the nations of the earth unify, to declare War on International Terrorism. After all, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how terrorism seems to be among the great human equalizers of modern times. Add the risk of death by terrorism to birth, death, and sex. 

In other words, all human beings will benefit equally from winning a War on International Terrorism.

Nairobi, Kenya now joins Mumbi, India and the World Trade Center in New York City, along with other sites, where terrorism explodes like water splattering from a pot of hot grease.  

A root cause analysis of these heinous string of terrorist attacks should point to one solution, ie, an internationally unified World War on Terror, and win it, the same way Allies joined forces to win World War II. There's no other way to end the growing blight of terrorism than to confront it as a global war that humanity must win, to protect us from annihilation.We must win before terrorist groups eventually find the funds to buy unmentionable human destroying weapons.

But, who has the money to win a declared war on terrorism? Frankly, nobody.  Therefore, it's essential for nations of the world to find out who's funding terrorism and, in a root cause analysis, turn those funds off.

So, the correct answer to the hypothetical SAT question is #1.

Costly Government Shut Down and the Tea Party's Tyrant Influence

Tyrants are people who exercise power oppressively, like the Tea Party.

Clearly, Tea Party right wing Republican extremists are tyrants. They're imploring oppressive and undemocratic pressure on the government to leverage a federal shut down for the purpose of oppressively forcing repeal of the health care reform law, known as Obamacare, just because they happen not to like it. 

It's completely unclear to me how Republicans get away with this tyrannical behavior, when we live in a democracy where Obamacare was voted into law by a majority of the people's Congress. Subsequently, the law was also upheld by the US Supreme Court as a Constitutional law.

Even more repressive, the Tea Party zealots are costing tax payers lots of money by using obstructionist tactics to get their tyrannical way. Here's why:

1.  Obamacare is currently being operationalized by hundreds of health care organizations and insurers who are preparing to implement the law on October 1, 2013, and provide January 1, 2014 insurance coverage. Any delay or unfunding of this momentum will cost tax payers and insurance beneficiaries money in opportunities cost, because the implementation cannot pay in 2015 (the proposed delay) with 2013 money.  In other words, unfunding will require preparation to cease, a cost in and of itself, and re-implementing will be more costly in 2015, after the price is adjusted for inflation.

2.  Much of the Obamacare law is already implemented.  Do Tea Party zealots mean to roll back that which is already in place?  If so, this is plain crazy because how does one take a 23 year old off of a parental insurance policy if they don't have other coverage? Does the Tea Party really mean to remove children with chronic health care needs off of their parents health care plans?  Really?

3.  Obamacare is law. Therefore, the President of the United States must do whatever is necessary to implement and uphold the law. There's at least one precedent for a President's to uphold the law in the face of obstructionism. Do Tea Party zealots remember when President Dwight Eisenhower used federal troops to escort Negro children into racially desegregated schools, after the US Supreme Court upheld the landmark Brown versus the Board of Education ruling?  Upholding Obamacare may require President Barack Obama to prevent the shut down of government against obstructionism by Tea Party zealots, because their tyrannical tactics are focused on destroying our national economy for the purpose of bringing down a federal law. Obviously, I'm not a Constitutional lawyer like President Obama, but it seems to me the intent of closing down the government is to obstruct implementation of a federal law, which requires executive intervention.  In other words, President Obama must keep the government open and implement Obamacare, overriding the minority influence of the tyrannical Tea Party. In my opinion, people will welcome this high level of intervention if it means our nation will pay bills already incurred and allows Obamacare to move forward as required. All the above is costly in time and enforcement, while tax payers pay the bill

Tea Party zealots screech like cats mating when they see the government spending money to help people with important programs like Food Stamps, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans and Unemployment benefits. Nevertheless, they have no morals, whatsoever, when wasting money to break the health care reform law. 

It seems like hypocrisy and tyrannical behavior go hand in hand.

Tyrants have always been an ugly part of the human condition, but at some point, ethical and legal leadership must restrain their undue influence. It's time President Obama takes action on behalf of the law. As as Commander in Chief, he must exert Executive leadership to keep our government from shutting down. In doing what's right, and anti-tyrannical, President Obama will prevent the harm and cost caused by closing down government and protect the implementation of the Obamacare law.

A value added to doing what's right and Constitutionally justified is the elimination of the undue influence of the tyrannical Tea Party. This will save the government the money wasted by Tea Party obstructionists, who are obsessed with undermining our democracy for the sake of forcing their unlawfully zealous agenda.

Buffet Says "stupid" to Describe Holding Back the US Dept Ceiling:

I remember when a person who called someone "stupid" and "dumb" was wrong enough to justify a reprimand. Sometimes, however, calling a "spade a spade" is the only way to get the attention of voters. So here's the problem. Elected officials in Congress are using the debt ceiling to blackmail President Obama to unfund health care reform passed in "Obamacare".

They are stupid.  

President Obama can't succumb to blackmail about Obamacare, because it's a law. That's all there is to it.

Instead, we must vote our stupid and dumb Republican politicians in the US Congress out of office, because they're behaving like selfish children who can't get their way. 

In other words, a minority of right wing extremists don't want Obamacare, aka health care reform, so they're holding their breath in a tantrum, threatening to block an increase in the US debt ceiling, until they get their way. The problem is, of course, these childish and obstructionist Republicans are turning blue waiting to get their way. Unfortunately, they're stupidly intent on bringing down US government operations, rather than behave like adults and do the work for which they're elected. Their work is to lift the US debt ceiling and to keep the government operating.  

Republicans need to do their jobs and stop obstructing government. If these obstructionist Republicans worked in the private sector, they'd be summarily fired for incompetence.

Nonetheless, apparently, Congressional Republicans are immune to the degrading "stupid" label. Not only are they holding up the debt ceiling as a threat, but some are even engaged in political blackmail. These stupid politicians are using the debt ceiling as leverage to unfund the implementation of Obamacare, aka health care reform.  

These Republican politicians are beyond stupid. They're breaking the law, two times. Obamacare is a law and can't be held hostage to prevent a rise in the debt ceiling. Blackmail is also against the law. 

Being called "stupid" must be the world's most insulting accusation. After all, nearly everyone believes they're smart at what they do, so being called stupid is an insult to the human condition. To be called "dumb" is even worse."Dumb" is a slur, because it suggests a person is incapable of ever becoming smart or being "unstupid".  

Unfortunately, Republican are either deaf to these insults or they are "stupid is as stupid does". I suspect all of the above. 

Now, finance guru Warren Buffett joins the choral ensemble, along with Governor Jindal of Louisiana, who are resorting to appropriate name calling of the minority of dumb politicans who are creating a "dumb and dumber" label for Republicans. 

Governor Jindal of Louisiana warned Republicans, over a year ago, to stop being the "stupid" party.

Nevertheless, the dumb Repubilcans in Congress are holding back the lifting of the United States debt ceiling.  

Reuters reports, in fact, that billionaire Buffett says it's dumb of the Congress not to lift the debt ceiling, in anticipation of yet another fiscal crises, hanging like a grim reaper, over the American government's daunting budget.  

Billionaire Warren Buffett said that Congressional politicians not lifting the U.S. debt ceiling would be "pretty damn dumb" and viewed a prolonged political standoff on the issue as "disturbing."

Dumb Congress

It seems to me, the Republican "dumb" and "stupid" labels are sticking. Yet, they don't seem to care. These stupid and dumb people in Congress are harming middle class economic security by holding up President Obama's American Jobs Act. Furthermore, they're resorting to blackmail about Obamacare, using this law to leverage a vote about raising the US debt ceiling.  

This threatening behavior should be unconstitutional! 

Our US Congress has a responsibility to protect our national security including the economy. This means, passing the Jobs Act, to fix the infrastructure of the US transportation and other concrete infrastructures.

Moreover, Congress has a moral and ethical responsibility to keep the government operating.

Congressional Republicans are acting dumb and stupid. They're irresponsibly using blackmail about Obamacare and obstructionist tactics to hold our economy hostage. They're like spoiled children, while they screech in a tantrum, including a series of wasteful votes to unfund Obamacare.  

Our health care system needs the payment reforms included in Obamacare. Those who oppose the Obamacare law are probably financially secure, so they don't likely need the benefits. Yet, to unfund Obamacare isn't fair to those who need the coverage.

Completely lacking in this stupid cycle is political leadership by House Speaker John Boehner. Rather than behaving like a House Speaker, Boehner looks more like the stupid ring leader of the dumb GOP members of Congress.

Tragically, Republicans don't seem to mind the "dumb" and "stupid" labels. Sadly, Republican indifference to ignorance is the most tragic label of all. They con't care about Americans who need an operational government, so long as they get their right wing way.

Dumb and stupid Congressional Republicans, with their ring leader John Boehner, are hurting America's economy. In so doing, they're eroding the fiscal security of our nation's middle class.
 
Middle class voters realize how a dysfunctional government that can't pay it's bills, because the debt ceiling is frozen, is bad for our economic security. Soon, voters will show the stupid and dumb Republicans how a smart electorate can vote these obstructionist idiots out of office. 

Meanwhile, Republicans must listen to the smart opinions of middle class people who are struggling to maintain economic security. 

We need to employ smart politicians in Congress, officials who will care and nurture our nation. 

America must rid our government of dumb and stupid politicians in the Republican Party. Dangerous right wing Republican politicians appear to be the dumb and stupid puppets of an even dumber extremist minority. They need to disappear and let the real Republican Party lead the nation's conservatives.

Right wing extremists who support a dumb government might find an island off the coast of the uninhabited Easter Island, where they can worship the icons created by another stupid bunch of people who created an obsession with rock formations, eons ago.  

Stupid politicians are better off leading rock formations, rather than allowing them to put our nation into a regressive cycle of dumb and dumber regressive economics.
