Rest in Peace Justice Antonin Scalia 1936-2016
National condolences to the family of Justice Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly today. Of course, following a brief national bereavement, it is the responsibility of President Obama to nominate a succssor to Justice Scalia, as soon as possible. There are many important decisions to be voted on, currently befoe the Supreme Court. Therefore, the successor must be nominated to contribute to the improtant pending decisions.
It is a Constitutional responsibility of the President of the United States to nominate the successor to Justice Scalia, immediately.
As a matter of fact, I believe the late Justice Scalia would want President Obama to nominate his successor because doing so is the right thing to do. As a matter of fact, it is irresponsible for President Obama to pass on this Constitutional responsibility.
(CNN) U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia (1936-2016) , a leading conservative voice on the high court, has died at the age of 79, a government source and a family friend told CNN on Saturday.
His death set off an immediate debate about whether President Barack Obama should fill the seat in an election year, and sources told CNN Saturday night that the President plans to nominate a replacement. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the nomination should wait until the next president comes into office, while top Democrat Harry Reid called for the seat to be filled "right away."
Scalia died in his sleep during a visit to Texas. A government official said Scalia went to bed Friday night and told friends he wasn't feeling well. He didn't get up for breakfast on Saturday morning, and the group he was with for a hunting trip left without him.
With due respect to the departed, Scalia's death is an awesome opportunity for President Obama to show creative leadership. His nomination of a successor requires extraordinary strategic leadership. Our nation cannot wait for a daunting political debate about who President Obama will nominate to succeed Justice Scalia, because to postpone the appointment means the court will be unable to make majority decisions on key arguments, now pending. Nominating a successor to Justice Scalia is essential because, otherwise, the high court's seat will irresonsibly be vacant for over a year.
Meanwhile, the contentous decisions pending before the court at this time, especially regarding the President's executive order on immigration reform, risks never being resolved if the court is divided. Moreover, with the untimely death of Justice Antonin Scalia, the Right To Life (RTL) movement to reverse the Supreme Court's decision on Roe versus Wade may completely disappear.
