Donald Trump certainly failed again when he tried to bully Canada into signing an unfair bad faith trade agreement with the U.S.

Opinion letter published in The New York Times:

I applaud Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, for walking away from the recent trade negotiations with the United States and moving to counter Washington’s tariffs dollar for dollar. And I believe most Americans quietly (and many not so quietly) do also.

Donald Trump and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick used bad-faith last-minute bargaining tactics to try to force Prime Minister Carney into signing an unfair deal for Canada, including expanding the scope, buried clauses and threats to Canada’s sovereignty. Prime Minister Carney was right to walk away from the negotiations.

Canada is our second-largest trading partner. Millions of Americans benefit every day from the free movement of goods, services, energy and investment across our shared border.

That relationship should be treated as an extraordinary asset, not as leverage to force Canada into accepting an agreement that it believes is fundamentally unfair.

Prime Minister Carney has made clear that Canada remains willing to pursue a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States. But, also, Mr. Carney made clear that Canada will not compromise its sovereignty simply to obtain a deal.

As an American, I hope Canadians recognize that most Americans still value the extraordinary relationship that our two countries have built over generations. Donald Trump and his advisers do not speak for a majority of Americans today.  We patiently wait for the next election.
