Each president of the United States has an opportunity to be a true leader. But time and again, Donald Trump demonstrates the (evil❗)  👿opposite.

True leaders unite people; they do not promote divisiveness. Trump instead fuels division, labeling opponents “scum,” dismissing critics as “enemies,” and belittling entire communities for political gain.

True leaders facilitate open, honest dialogue; they do not vilify those who disagree. Yet Trump lashes out at anyone who questions him. Republicans, Democrats, judges, journalists are all targeted as he reduces disagreement to personal attack rather than democratic debate. (Donald Trump created an AI generated meme video showing him flying a plane while dropping human excrement on American cities, to demonstrate his contempt for free speech displayed by millions of peaceful No Kings demonstrators.)

True leaders show compassion and empathy; they do not bully, intimidate or humiliate. Trump mocked a disabled reporter, belittled Gold Star families, and routinely derides public servants with crude insults. True leaders speak the truth; they do not promote lies or dismiss facts they dislike as “hoaxes” or “fake news.” Trump has repeatedly spread falsehoods about election integrity and the justice system, undermining trust in our institutions.

True leaders promote peace; they do not incite violence. Trump has encouraged supporters to rough up protestors, and praised and ultimately pardoned the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

True leaders value democracy; they do not attempt to emulate brutal dictators. Trump openly admires leaders like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un while repeatedly disparaging America’s allies.

Qualities of truth, compassion, respect and democracy are the same values we teach our children and grandchildren. They are the foundation of good citizenship and responsible leadership. 

When the president himself rejects them, it sends the dangerous message that cruelty and dishonesty are acceptable in public life. At every turn, Donald Trump shows us what a true leader is not. America deserves better.
