Reflection Needed on U.S. Capitol Riot

Opinion letter published in the West Virginia Intelligencer News-Register newspaper:

As a woman of faith, I watched the storming of the Capitol building as it unfolded with a mixture of disbelief, horror, and sadness. As I watched, one thought would not go away — what if they had been Black? In your January 11 “Reporter’s Notebook” editorial, while you denounced the actions of the rioters and called out our own state elected officials who are complicit because of their unwavering support of (the racist) president  who incited this violence, I read nothing about the stark and undeniable racism on display that day.

In fact, the white rioters were not only able to access the building, they were, for the most part, able to roam freely. Black rioters would surely have been shot down.

As citizens of the United States, we must take this opportunity to pause, reflect, and grapple with the history and legacy of systemic racism that has brought us to this moment. We cannot ignore the juxtaposition of the law enforcement response to the violence at the Capitol versus the violence inflicted on Black Lives Matter protesters in June. We must all reflect on the action we must take to repair our democracy, reclaim our oneness of heart even while having different opinions, eliminate white privilege, and contribute to the work of effecting reconciliation in our nation.
