Democrats sound like the Republicans of yesteryear . They flipped the policy script!
Republicans are protecting the chaotic Donald Trump policies, but he isn't doing very much, if anything, to reciprocate. Indeed, Repbulicans must take the position of looking out for themselves.
They are protecting an unstable and failed leader.
Democrats flipped the script on national security.
For several decades — since the early Cold War, really — Republicans have usually been able to convince the country that they were the ones to be trusted to keep Americans safe. But, as with so much else, President Trump has squandered that durable advantage.
Democrats running for the party's nomination sound very much like Republicans of yore, in their denouncement to Trump for jeopardizing America's national security.
“When I was deployed, I knew one of the things keeping me safe was the flag on my shoulder represented a country that kept its word,” said South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a veteran. “You take away the honor of our soldiers, you might as well go after their body armor next. This president has betrayed American values.”
A reader's echo response in Letters to the Editor:
Dana Milbank’s Oct. 16, Washington Sketch column, “Democrats flip the script on security” [op-ed], about Democrats sounding more patriotic regarding security, was spot on. It should not be surprising that Republicans, or at least those who support President Trump, have “flipped their script,” however. We have seen it in other stances, most emphatically on the national debt.
Republicans decried President Bill Clinton, who achieved a balanced budget and brought down the national debt without the support of Republicans. Then, as President Barack Obama dealt with a recession of Republican making, caused by a housing crisis of too easy credit for those uncreditworthy, he brought the country back from the brink of depression, to a solid footing. Again, this happened without the help of many Republicans. Republicans apparently care only about themselves and not the country as a whole.
