Trump border wall is a fear symbol
"Mexico will pay for it".... theTrumpzi "fear wall...."
An echo opinion published in the Minnesota Daily newspaper
From when he introduced it back during the presidential campaign right up to the present, Donald Trump's call for a new southern border wall has been a textbook example of classic fear mongering demagoguery.
It works like this: Create an enemy, a dangerous and threatening "them;" continually vilify and demonize "them" in order to prey on people's prejudices and xenophobic fears (note Trump's repeated loud claims of a huge "invasion" of drug dealers, sex traffickers, murders and rapists); and present yourself as a savior, the great leader who will make our country "great again" and protect its people from "them."
Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini's "them" were socialists and communists. German leader Adolf Hitler's "them" were communists and Jews. Trump's "them" are Mexicans.
To deal with his self-proclaimed "crisis" at the border and to circumvent Congress' constitutionally granted funding authority, Trump has declared a sham national emergency in an attempt to expropriate $8.6 billion from taxpayers to construct the beginning sections of an anti-"them" wall. (Remember when he promised the wall was going to be free because he would make Mexico pay for it?)
In terms of government spending, $8.6 billion may not be all that much, but this could be just fora start of what Trump has hyped (as though it was one of his real estate deals) a "beautiful, big" and lengthy border wall.
In the end, if built as he wants it to be, Trump's wall could stand as a vastly expensive monument to fear, prejudice, and the massive ego of a narcissistic demagogue.
