Donald Trump is capable of taking any nefarious and illegal actions to stay in power and not go to prison

Echo opinion letter published in the Sun Sentinel a South Florida newspaper:

Anything to stay in power

It’s frightening 😱that our so-called president is attempting to buy the upcoming election with an offer of 💲5,000 to every adult if his party maintains its grip on Congress.

That he’s attempting to do this is not surprising, of course, because he has shown himself capable of taking any nefarious action to stay in power and not go to prison — similar to his buddy, Netanyahu.

The fright I feel comes not just from the possibility that this attempt to bribe the American people could work, but from the profoundly disturbing level of ignorance among too many of our fellow Americans who could allow it to work.

That Trump has so many entrenched followers is very
😟worrisome.😥

My hope is, this will rightly be proven illegal, not to mention insane, that we would borrow from ourselves and hand us unearned money as we continue down the road of destroying our democracy.

We must come to our senses and get this sick man out of office by using the 25th Amendment immediately,❗ or lose everything we have built over 250 years. We must act!

Donald Trump and maga Republicans now in a trade war with our friends in Canada PLUS trapped in an illegal Iran war with no way out

Rarely have there been two better neighbors than the United States and Canada.  Editorial published in the Sun Sentinel
We like each other. We share the world’s longest unfortified border. We’re partners in NORAD, the joint defense against Russian, Chinese and North Korean ICBMs.

The U.S. and Canada automakers are interdependent. Canada has been our No. 2 export market, worth
💲426 billion yearly. The U.S. is by far their largest trade partner, consuming 💲451 billion in Canadian products — a trade balance favoring us.

The arrival of Quebec license plates in South Florida used to announce a seasonal change, like leaves changing up north.

But lately there are fewer of them.

Only a blundering idiot could spoil such an alliance and threaten damage to Florida’s economy. But Donald Trump, the self-proclaimed “very stable genius,” has done just that.

Threatening Canadian sovereignty

To hear Trump’s trade negotiator tell it, Canada walked away at the last minute from an offer too good to refuse.
From Prime Minister Mark Carney’s standpoint, Canada had no honorable alternative. At the 11th hour, he said, the U.S. wanted to restrict Canada’s ability to trade with other nations, a threat to its sovereignty that would reduce Canada to America’s 51st state.

Trump immediately executed his threat to levy 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods, including clothes, holiday ornaments and 36 kinds of plywood, yet another kick in the chops to U.S. builders and would-be homebuyers. Trump even singled out dog leashes and collars.

Canada had no choice but to respond in kind. Now people on both sides of the border will pay for a senseless trade war instigated by a petulant and vengeful president. It looks like payback for the failure of Trump’s haughty demand to make Canada our 51st state. With 41 million people, Canada is bigger than California, and it has more total land area than the U.S.

Trump’s belligerence has done Canada a favor. Support in French-speaking Quebec for independence from Canada has fallen to 30% — the lowest in years, Reuters reports (separation narrowly failed in a 1995 referendum).

Trump divides, they unite

The pro-separation Parti Quebecois has led in polls ahead of an October provincial vote. Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, the party leader, said it would not call for another referendum while Trump is still president. To his credit, he said Quebec’s future “must not be hijacked by the upheaval of American politics, the outbursts of an unpredictable president or by a campaign of fear.”

It is highly commendable for Carney, the national premier, to stand up to America’s bully. No other nation is so exposed economically to his wrath, yet none has shown the spunk of Canada in dealing with Trump’s threats.

Too bad Carney’s gumption doesn’t rub off on Congress. (Senator Susan Collins alert❗⚠️) It will not stop Trump’s vainglorious, hideous ballroom project, curb the cruelty of his mass deportations or stop the ruination of our national defense in a war with Iran that he seems clueless of how to manage, let alone win.

His interference with the annual U.S. and South Korean joint military exercises puts our troops in grave danger from Kim Jong Un, the North Korean dictator whom Trump admires so inexplicably.
Scheming to placate Trump

His Fox (Fake ❗)News green room Pentagon hatchet man has just fired the leaders of the once-independent military paper Stars and Stripes, which has been a huge morale booster for the troops since World War II, when Bill Mauldin’s cartoons poked fun at the brass and stuck up for the dogfaced infantrymen Willie and Joe.

Now the Navy is reneging on its promise to name an aircraft carrier for Doris Miller, the heroic Black mess attendant who manned a machine gun at Pearl Harbor. It is scheming shamefully to rename it for Trump, a draft-dodger better known to the military as Cadet Bone Spurs. How nauseating! Congress should stop that, too.

Trump’s Postal Service has issued a 95-page rule to implement his restrictions on mail voting, despite a federal court order against that voter suppression scheme. (But the rubber stamp Supreme Court authorized the plan to move forward.)

The regulation said it would take effect this year only if the Supreme Court rules his way on pending litigation. It calls for refusing to count mail ballots in states that don’t share voter data with the government. It is all about manipulating the election to control Congress.

He threatens to sue the highly respected Center for American Progress for 💲5 billion over its criticism of his National Guard deployment in Washington. The courts are overdue for sanctioning his frequent abuse of the legal system.

The Department of Homeland Security, which doesn’t seem willing or able to keep its agents from killing unarmed civilians, proposes to equip them with gloves that give electric shocks.

It’s enough to make you consider moving to Canada — a country where they stand up to Trump.

Donald Trump and RFKjr are creating political confusion about vaccine safety without any experience or evidence

Echo opinion letters published in the South Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper:
Donald Trump and RFKjr are incompetent political bookends creating havoc about vaccine safety, when neither of them has an ounce of any medical education.  I sincerely doubt Donald Trump has ever read even one book having to do with medical information. RFKjr is a egotist who has no moral compass.
Just when you thought our (stupid❗) omnipotent president exceeded his own reckless actions, he now reduced the number of universally recommended vaccines for our children, based upon his “feelings.”

This action has no medical prudence and totally contradicts the esteemed American Academy of Pediatrics.

Donald Trump tells parents that children should not be subjected to a vaccine “the size of a soda can” (that’s a lie 🤥), and he recommends three individual injections. What he neglects to say is that children should take a total of six medically recommended vaccines.

It is quite apparent that Donald Trump is taking out his frustrations on the medical community. He pontificates that vaccines cause autism (another lie 🤥🤥❗).

Hopefully, all pediatricians will follow our grandchild’s physician, who tells parents that if they don’t want medically proven vaccines for their child, then this is the wrong medical practice for them.

From — Neil Levine, in Boca Raton, Florida

Our kids will be the losers

As reported widely, “Stupid ❗[Trump’s] vaccine order will recommend separating the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three different shots, administered in separate visits,” but “separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccines for children … are not currently available in the U.S.”

Will we purchase these vaccines abroad and let families pay tariff money into Trump’s general revenues
❓ Or will we find out that a Trump-affiliated pharma company is already gearing up to produce them here❓ Either way, Trump wins, America’s kids lose.

Donald Trump's hideous excesses

Echo opinion letter published in the South Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper:
It is so apparent that selfish Donald Trump, the repsident of the United States doesn’t give a damn about this country or its people.

He only cares about himself and how much he can enrich himself and his family.

Since he has been desecrating the White House, Trump's misguided priorities are the destruction and reconstruction of the the historic "people's house", putting tacky gold fixtures and needless embellishments throughout the building, redoing the now hideous Reflecting Pool, building grotesque statues of himself, trying to push through his Arc de Trump, putting his name on airports, selling cheap merchandise and illegally enriching himself while in office, slapping his name on American currency, adding his name to the Kennedy Center for the Arts (since taken down), holding boxing matches in the South Lawn of the people’s White House, doing away with programs to feed the poor and cutting back on Medicaid and Medicare.

There’s not enough space in one letter to describe the ugly aberrations about Donald Trump.

All of the aforesaid is more important to Trump than the needs of the people. I hope Trump supporters wake up and smell the roses in the upcoming elections around the country.  Time to VOTE TRUMP OUT OF OFFICE NOW❗

Donald Trump and maga cult are determined to upset the American elections; Where is Senator Susan Collins?

The most dangerous weapon for a democracy to put in control of an aspiring dictator is not necessarily the police or the military.

Echo editorial board opinion published in the Sun Sentinel, a South Florida newspaper.

It’s control over the ballot box, the source of power over everything else.
Our vulnerability is never more obvious than in President Trump’s insistence on dictating how states conduct elections and who can vote. His feverish obsession is a frontal assault on democracy. Nothing could be more important than for Congress and the courts to thwart him.

Trump is so desperate to suppress voting in the midterms that he’s blocking enactment of a critical national security bill, and he refuses to sign overwhelmingly popular bipartisan housing legislation until Congress acts on his voter suppression bill.

Denying women the right to vote

The deceptively named SAVE America Act would impose a proof of citizenship provision that would disenfranchise millions of women whose married names don’t match their birth certificates. It would also largely eliminate voting by mail — the method used by a third of all participating voters in Florida in the last statewide election.

He called off signing the housing bill as sponsors gathered to celebrate it and before a scheduled closed-door luncheon with Senate Republicans — blindsiding members of his own party. Trump is playing the foulest sort of politics with security and with the shelter needs of millions of Americans.

It takes a tyrant with an empty soul to do that.
Asserting election jurisdiction that neither the Constitution nor the Congress gives him, Trump has also signed a breathtaking executive order. Two federal judges have now pronounced it unconstitutional, the latest Thursday (Trump will appeal).

A federal voter dossier

Trump’s order also contemplates the federal government compiling its own state-by state lists of eligible voters. The database Trump would employ is error-prone and so afoul of federal privacy laws that a judge blocked its use.

It should never be the federal government’s business to manage elections, even if a trustworthy president were in office.

The original
Constitution (Artcle I, Section 4) left it to states to determine how to elect federal officers. It also authorized the Congress, but not the president, “to make or alter such regulations.”

The Postal Service ploy is deservedly under attack in the courts, where Trump is zero for 10 in lawsuits demanding state voter rolls.

As for the dangeros SAVE Act, Senate Republican leaders don’t have even a majority of votes to pass it, let alone the 60 to break a filibuster.

The Senate should also pass a clean foreign intelligence bill and dare him to veto it. Either he vetoes the housing law or it becomes law in a week or so, without his signature, but the clock doesn’t start until the House sends him the bill.

Speaker Mike Johnson could show leadership by sending it now.
The voters are watching
🗳️👀

The “voter fraud” Trump harps upon exists only in his mind, and only when he or his party loses. If Democrats are so good at cheating, then why did they let Trump narrowly win crucial swing states in 2016, and 2024❓

Making it harder to vote by mail is meant to hurt Democratic candidates because their voters are more likely to cast their ballots that way.

Trump has deluded many Republicans into distrusting our elections, especially mail voting — even though he has voted by mail in Palm Beach County, as recently as March.

By denigrating the foundation of our democracy, Trump is willfully- purposefully- eroding it. Serious inquiries have turned up only vanishingly rare cases of ineligible people voting or of someone voting twice in any election.

What is a legitimate concern are the complaints, hardly from Trump alone, about seemingly interminable vote counts in some states. Prolonged uncertainty feeds conspiracy theories. That’s notably true of California, but the problem is simply that it allows up to 30 days for vote canvassing.

The appropriate remedy is to shorten that, not to make election day the deadline for returning mail ballots. That would put too much trust and power into the hands of a postal service whose legal independence Trump does not respect.

A reasonable compromise on ballots that arrive after the election would be to count them if they were postmarked in advance of election day rather than on election day itself. But that choice belongs to the states — not Trump, whose only interest is in rigging the rules for his party’s benefit.

Trump complains incessantly that if voters elect a Democratic Congress in November, it would begin investigating his administration’s mounting heap of misdeeds, blunders and corruption — as well it should.

Maine Writer P.S.- Maine Senator Susan Collins has 28 years seniority to call for impeachement of Donald John Trump because he is trampling our Constitution, but she does nothing.

Donald Trump is "Typhoid Mary" of the Republican party. MAGA cult must break with his toxic brand

Echo opinion letter published in the Sun Sentinel, a Florida newspaper.

Despite the contagion of mid-decade gerrymandering (i.e., cheating) infecting our politics, spread by Donald Trump, the Typhoid Mary of our times, I have a hopeful thought.

Is it possible that discerning citizens, accustomed to voting for Republicans, might break the fever and realize that the cure to higher-priced gas, food and health care is to inoculate themselves and the rest of the country by refraining from re-electing GOP members of the House and Senate who rubber-stamped Trump’s toxic, ill-conceived policies that are so ruinous for the country?

I’m referring to those who allowed Trump to spread DOGE like a virus and gut essential services; who enabled him to pile on vindictive tariffs that disrupted supply chains and burdened or devastated businesses and farms; who excused Trump as he unleashed the unfettered brutality of ICE on our cities, ripping apart families and resulting in the detention, deportation, and death of U.S. citizens and others here legally, while claiming he was going after “the worst of the worst.”

Then there’s blocking the release of the Epstein files and unilaterally spending hundreds of millions on monuments to himself and billions on his personal war with Iran, while calling the issue of affordability a hoax. And the embrace of Putin, who plays Trump like a fiddle, and the betrayal of ally Ukraine. Could Republican voters be finally sick and tired enough of all of this “winning” to vote out those who allowed this to fester and metastasize
❓ Stranger things have happened.

Vote Joe Biden: Save the Republic echo "If we can keep it!"

Endorsement: Save our democracy. Vote Joe Biden!
Echo editorial opinion published in the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
In fact, the Sun Sentinel didn't wait around to see what other media endorsements would join them.  This editorial position was published in August, 2020.

A republic, Madam, if you can keep it — Benjamin Franklin, Philadelphia, 1787, when asked what the Constitutional Convention had proposed.

Franklin answered the question 233 years ago, and his response overshadows every other issue in the 2020, presidential election.

It is why we recommend, with enthusiasm and a sense of urgency, that voters elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to be the president and vice president of the United States. In so doing, the American people will answer whether our representative democracy, under the rule of law, is still worth keeping.

But now, as former President Barack Obama declared last week, the main question is whether the presidency will be “the custodian of this democracy” and “defend the freedoms and ideals that so many Americans marched for and went to jail for, fought for and died for.”

Biden and Harris have what it takes to do that. They have the essential integrity, ability, experience and proven dedication to uphold the Constitution, serve the people, remedy our present crises, and regain respect for the government at home and abroad.

Moreover, the Democratic Party did itself proud in nominating them.

They can be trusted to work intelligently and fairly on the nation’s long agenda of unmet needs, including control of the coronavirus, confronting climate change, restoring voting rights, and other priorities that we will discuss below.

A decent and honorable man

Character matters! Vice-President Joe Biden’s character has never been in question, throughout 46 years of public service, as a senator and as vice president.

Hear this from a Republican, former Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, who wrote last week that he will vote for the Democratic ticket, even though he expects to disagree over policies:

“Biden is fundamentally a decent and honorable man who respects the American tradition, supports the rule of law, embraces America’s friends and allies, and will restore some semblance of normalcy to the functioning of government. That’s all I want — and not too much to ask of a President.

Vice-President Biden will perform these duties, respectfully and with dignity.”

That cannot be said about Donald Trump.

Regrettably, he has proved himself unfit, untrustworthy and unwilling to uphold the ideals embedded in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, or to take seriously his responsibility for the health and welfare of the American people and the lives of our armed service members overseas.

Heed the warnings, end the chaos

Consider the warning written by Retired Admiral William H. McRaven, who commanded the Navy’s special forces, in a Washington Post op-ed:

“Today, as we struggle with social upheaval, soaring debt, record unemployment, a runaway pandemic, and rising threats from China and Russia, President Trump is actively working to undermine every major institution in this country. He has planted the seeds of doubt in the minds of many Americans that our institutions aren’t functioning properly. And, if the president doesn’t trust the intelligence community, law enforcement, the press, the military, the Supreme Court, the medical professionals, election officials and the postal workers, then why should we? And if Americans stop believing in the system of institutions, then what is left but chaos and who can bring order out of chaos: only Trump. It is the theme of every autocrat who ever seized power or tried to hold onto it.”

The president’s fatal flaw, to the nation’s peril, is his narcissism. For the national interest, Trump can’t see beyond the nearest mirror.

From the outset of the coronavirus tragedy, when he began promising — as he still does — that it would just “go away,” he has treated it as an inconvenience to his re-election. He imagined himself wiser than (expert!) Dr. Anthony Fauci and other scientists.

It has been the most vast and tragic leadership failure in our history. Now, the nation is paying an intolerable price, with more than 170,000 lives and perhaps 50 million jobs lost so far, for his ignorance, incompetence and ego.

Everything is about him. That was glaring again just the other day when he spoke favorably of QAnon, the viral internet conspiracy theory that insanely imagines a cult of pedophiles and cannibals linked to the Democratic Party. The FBI rightly considers such fantasies to be domestic terrorism; it has inspired actual crimes.

“I’ve heard that these are people that love our country,” Trump said. “So I don’t know really anything about it other than that they do supposedly like me.” (Emphasis supplied)

“Why in the world would the President not kick Qanon supporters’ butts? Nut jobs, rascists (sic) haters have no place in either Party,” Jeb Bush, Florida’s former governor, responded on Twitter.

Our better nature

We hope that message is heard by all independents and responsible Republicans, whose votes could determine the outcome of this election. They deserve better than Trump.

A genuine conservative like Bush would have appointed conservative judges, signed tax cuts into law and repealed many — though hardly all — of the environmental regulations that Trump has been discarding wholesale.

But he would have done so while upholding the Constitution, the rule of law and the dignity of the presidency.

Trump is no conservative. He is an illiberal, demagogic populist who appeals to racism and misogyny for a critical mass of votes and is inflaming the divisions in an already polarized nation. Whatever benefits some people see in his economic policies, they are not worth that price.

The president should set an example of personal decency. Trump is vulgar, crass, coarse and vicious toward anyone, even in his own party, who disagrees with him. He cannot admit a mistake for fear that it would make him look weak. When a reporter asked him recently whether he regrets lying to the American people, he couldn’t come up with an answer.

He is shrewd, calculated and cunning, but those traits do not substitute for intelligence, thoughtfulness and curiosity.

Achievements don’t trump abuses

He is not without constructive achievements, although they are few. They include the Israeli-United Arab Emirates peace accord, the new North American trade agreement, and the initiative to import less-expensive prescription drugs from Canada.

But his overall record is of broken promises — such as the border wall that Mexico would pay for and the release of his income tax returns. He has uttered more than 20,000 outright lies or fabrications, damaged relations with Canada and other allies who have helped preserve world peace, decimated civilian agencies, continued to assault and undermine the Affordable Care Act without any plan to replace it, ignored and even aggravated the climate change crisis, snatched immigrant children from their families to be put into cages, prostituted the Departments of Justice and State, fired whistleblowers and inspectors general, wrecked the Environmental Protection Agency, coarsened the domestic political dialogue, kowtowed to the gun lobby, failed to repair our crumbling infrastructure, and deployed troops and tear gas against peaceful protestors.

He has committed gross abuses of power in the Ukraine scandal and in attempting to impede Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russia’s efforts to elect him — efforts with which top campaign aides cooperated, according to the scathing bipartisan report of the Senate Intelligence Committee. The president knew and discussed Democratic e-mails Russia had stolen. The report documents cooperation between his first campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and a Russian intelligence officer.

Trump still prefers the sly denials of an enemy, Vladimir Putin, to the considered consensus of our intelligence community. He didn’t bother to ask Putin whether it is true that Russia offered bounties on the lives of American service members in Afghanistan.

No president has ever even hinted at disrespecting the outcome of an election he might lose, but this one has pointedly refused to rule that out. In openly undermining the Postal Service, he is setting up mail voting as the pretext for a coup. He has even spoken aloud about seeking an unconstitutional third term.

The nation cannot afford four more years of Donald Trump!

We need the Vice President Joe Biden & Senator Kamala Harris ticket to make things right!

America’s challenges

Many of our national problems predate Trump and both parties have been responsible for glossing over some and making others worse. It would be as unrealistic to expect the Biden administration to solve them all as to trust Trump to fix any. But we can expect honest, competent efforts from Biden and Harris.

First things first: The coronavirus pandemic needs to be confronted and controlled on the basis of science, rather than instinct.

Our nation must be better prepared for the next inevitable pandemic. That means rebuilding the Centers for Disease Control and the state departments of public health

That will go a long way to restoring the health of the economy.

Income inequality has grown to be the most glaring among 67 nations studied by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Growing numbers of Americans no longer expect, as their parents did, that their children will have a better life. That sense of alienation unquestionably contributed to Trump’s election, but he has done little for those who felt that way.

The death of George Floyd under the knee of a police officer has awakened millions of Americans to the reality of racism in the United States. Biden and Harris are the right people to confront that.

Tragically, the pandemic has exposed unacceptable weaknesses in the health care system that was supposed to be the world’s best. For what it costs — twice what other advanced nations pay — it ought to be the world’s best. But by outcomes, it’s not. Black, Hispanic and Native Americans have suffered and died disproportionately of COVID-19, and not, as some assume, on account of lifestyle. Housing segregation, unequal treatment in health care facilities, and a preponderance of low-paying jobs without health insurance are mainly at fault. Endemic racism has contributed to all of that.

The premise that health insurance should depend on where one works is no longer valid. At least 10 million people lost theirs, at the worst possible time, when the pandemic shuttered offices, schools and factories. Medicare can and should be expanded to be available to anyone who needs it.

Attention!  The Medicare and Social Security trust funds are drawing down their reserves and need to be strengthened for long-term sustainability. This is as important to younger workers, if not more so, because there are some right-wing politicians who would leave them to fend for themselves.

Voting rights have been under attack ever since the Supreme Court eviscerated the noble law that the late Rep. John Lewis had nearly given his life for. There’s no doubting Joe Biden’s commitment to restore it.

There must be a comprehensive immigration reform that saves the Dreamers and creates a path to citizenship for the millions of immigrants upon whom Florida’s and the nation’s agricultural, hospitality and construction industries depend.

Independence must be restored to the Justice Department, the intelligence agencies, the Postal Service and the Environmental Protection Agency, among other departments that the Trump administration has savaged.

For Biden, it’s about you

Biden  reiterated his independence from the National Rifle Association (NRA), which he helped defeat in 1993, with the background check law, and in 1994, with a 10-year ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Sadly, the ban lapsed in 2004, when Republicans controlled the House. The massacres at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland might have been averted. Biden’s 11-page plan includes a renewed assault weapons ban, a buyback program and universal background checks, all of which have broad support across America. A vote for the Biden-Harris ticket honors the 17 lives lost at Parkland.

When such tragedies occur, Americans have expected words of comfort and empathy from their presidents, who never before disappointed them. But, the creature in office now has yet to express any remorse for the victims of those who have suffered with the coronavirus. Sad to say, Trump is incapable.

Compare that to how, in accepting his party’s nomination Thursday night, Biden spoke to those who’ve suffered unimaginable loss during the pandemic.

“I know how it feels to lose someone you love. I know that deep black hole that opens up in your chest. That you feel your whole being is sucked into it. I know how mean and cruel and unfair life can be sometimes. But I’ve learned two things. First, your loved ones may have left this Earth, but they never leave your heart. They will always be with you. And, second, I found the best way through pain and loss and grief, is to find purpose.

“As God’s children each of us have a purpose in our lives.”

In this time of collective loss and grief, the American people have a purpose. It is to entrust their highest office to a decent man in whom kindness and empathy are as natural as drawing breath.

As Justice Louis Brandeis wrote, “Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or ill, it teaches the whole people by its example.”

Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Harris are the right people to set the right example.

The presidency is, as Teddy Roosevelt put it, a “bully pulpit.”

Trump has profaned that pulpit. Joe Biden will fill it with honor.
