In my opinion reproductive freedom is a human right!

Americans should all agree on reproductive freedom

Echo opinion letter published in the Orlando (Florida) Sentinel:

Dear Editor:  June 24 marks the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade by upholding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. We have watched abortion rights being decided by state governments around the country, and Florida’s elected supermajority decided to push an extreme six-week abortion ban this year. The governor signed the ban in April. This was done before an upcoming Florida Supreme Court ruling on whether or not the 15-week ban (passed last year and current law) is constitutional.

The Florida Supreme Court may well go against precedent and decide that Floridians’ constitutional right to privacy does not extend to abortion, letting the six-week ban become law 30 days later. 

Reproductive health care is a human right!

The radical shift in reproductive rights in Florida over the last year calls for voter intervention. Floridians deserve the freedom to make decisions about their own personal health care — including abortion — without interference from politicians.

Freedom is something Floridians should be able to agree on. We should also be able to agree that government overreach into our lives be limited. There is no one-size-fits-all care plan for pregnant women. Each pregnancy is different, as the recent tragic death of pregnant Olympic sprinter, Tori Bowie*, illustrates. I believe patients and doctors should make medically informed decisions, not politicians, and that voters should decide this issue. If you agree, please support Floridians Protecting Freedom to get abortion rights on the ballot and keep politicians out of our health-care decisions.

*The elite athlete died from natural causes, Associate Medical Examiner Chantel Njiwaji wrote in her autopsy report, citing evidence of Bowie undergoing labor when she died. The toxicology report came back negative.  Dr, Njiwaji cited possible complications from respiratory distress and eclampsia.
