Republicans are the "going going gone" Growing Old Party
A New York Times opinion perspective on how the Republican Party is circling the drain. Echo letters respond to an analysis published by Brett Stephens and David Brooks.
"with an extremist fringe seemingly in control of the House, the G.O.P. bears little resemblance to the party that was once their home.""As a conservative who left the Republican Party after the 2020 election, I too have watched this descent with dismay," from the former federal government attorney John Schnitker, Washington.
Obviously, the Republican establishment has lost the nerve to quell the more extreme voices. After all, only a small minority of Republicans, many of whom have since retired, voted to impeach Donald Trump after (Trump incited!) the January 6, insurrection.
But another and, perhaps more important reason is the success of the anti-democratic effects of Citizens United, the outdated Electoral College system and gerrymandering, and the applause for those who question election results when they lose. These eliminated the moderating force of appealing to both sides and incentivized more extreme voices to emerge.
To return the Republican party to something more recognizable to its members, the GOP must be willing to lose elections and learn to practice ethical leadership.
