Wearing a mask is a tried and true safety measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus
As chief medical officers, our principal roles are as physicians and clinical leaders of hospitals and health systems in South Florida.
But, we are also citizens, urging you – our neighbors – to work with us to achieve a rapid, healthy medical and economic recovery for our community, which has been suffering from the devastating effects of COVID-19.
We can start with a simple, scientifically proven public health measure that will have profound life-saving and economic impacts: the wearing of face masks by everyone who is capable.
The evidence is clear that wearing appropriate face masks is a critical step in limiting the spread of COVID-19. Masks also protect people from touching their face, eyes, mouth and nose with their potentially contaminated hands.
Wearing a mask is an act of respect, showing that you care about your own health and that of everyone around you. Along with good hand hygiene and physical distancing, wearing the right mask at the right time in public places, busy outdoor spaces, and offices obviously benefits public health – but it is also a key strategy for faster social and economic recovery. When we can safely interact in public – and not only feel safe but actually be safe without threat from this virus – our economy will rebound.
Another benefit of wearing masks: helping to preserve access to our healthcare systems for patients who need it most, and preventing our hospitals from being overwhelmed with potentially avoidable admissions of patients with COVID-19.
Mask wearing is practicing the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That long-taught civility, combined with this powerful, simple tool, can save lives and restore our economies.
As leading physicians in South Florida, we encourage everyone to wear a mask, as a symbol of love and respect for one another. By wearing a mask, you can restore hope and help the world achieve a brighter future.
Stay safe and be healthy.
