Donald Trump's failed Tulsa rally is a reason for him to resign. He has no decency

Trump is a man without policies as he seeks re-election

An echo opinion letter published in the Spiringfield Missouri News Leader

On June 9, 1954, during the McCarthy hearings, Joe McCarthy, the greatest conspiracy theorist in American history, that is, before Donald Trump, falsely accused a young attorney on the staff of Boston lawyer Joseph Welch as having ties to a Communist organization. The army had hired Joseph Welch to defend the Army against false allegations of Communist involvement. As a national television audience watched, Welch responded with the immortal words that ended McCarthy's career: "Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness." When McCarthy continued his attack, Welch angrily interrupted, "Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?"

With that exchange, McCarthy's national popularity came to an end. He was censured by his fellow Senators, denounced by his party, and ignored by the press. McCarthy died three years later a broken man.

Donald Trump finds himself in a similar situation. His Tulsa rally was a flop, few people came, and those who did come were bored to death with a stand-up comedy routine that put the crowd to sleep. The cameras caught many members yawning during the performance. Trump returned to Washington a broken man. Then to follow that up, on Sean Hannity’s program a few days later when asked a softball question on his plans and priorities for a second term, Trump said he had no plan or agenda for a second term. This was consistent with the accounts of John Bolton, who said Trump has no ideological or moral compass, no policy objectives, was only focused upon himself, and was essentially an “empty seat” in the Oval Office. Even Trump’s website for his reelection lists no policy statements on where he wants to take the country. The only theme recognizable for his campaign is one of tribalism and racism. That is the theme that Trump feels will resonate with his base and carry him to victory in November. More probably, Trump’s fate will be similar to that of Joe McCarthy.
