Robert Mueller is not a referee - being fair is not his job

Special Investigator Robert Mueller has an important responsibility. His report must be honest and truthful  But, Donald Trump prefers him to be "fair"~ that's not an option.
Donald Trump said on Thursday that he believes he will be fairly treated in a special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election, but said he did not know how long the probe would last. (Evidently, Donald Trump does not know that he should withhold any opinion about the special Mueller investigation.) Obviously, Trump has contemplated the various outcomes he can anticipate from the final Mueller report and he doesn't see "innocent" as being an option. Therefore "fair", in his mind, seems to be the alternative to any other option. I suspect, in Donald Trump's convoluted thinking, the word "fair" means he might not be guilty of what he did ~ obstruct justice.

Obviously, Donald Trump is concerned about Robert Mueller and the Russia investigation, because the entire process is a salient indictment of his presidential election- including casting a shadow on his family. In an assessment about Mueller being "fair", given in an unscripted New York Times interview, he showed just how worried he is.  It's like he's sending verbal cues to Mueller, by soliciting special consideration in advance of what he knows will be a final critical report. After all, there's no way Mueller can report anything except for obstruction of justice.

In fact, Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey, because he wouldn't give up investigating the Russian infiltration of the 2016 election. That was not a "fair" action against Comey.

Trump's firing of Comey was an obstruction of justice.

So far, Mueller has charged four Trump associates in his investigation. Nevertheless, Russia has denied interfering in the U.S. election, even while all international and US intelligence agencies have evidence of the occurrence of multiple layers of communication.

Robert Mueller knows the significance of his final report. Russia invaded our US democracy in 2016 (and probably in other elections, as well) and when the final report is made public, the future of Donald Trump's administration will be determined by how he measures his response. Fairness is not an outcome. Rather, what is essential, is a response that will protect our democracy against illegal Russian influence. Those who were complicit in the election invasion by Russia must be dealt with honestly.
