Echo opinion letter to the editor: Donald Trump presides over a U.S. population of 348 million people. Pope Leo has a world following of more than 1.4 billion people. 

Trump’s approval rating is under 40%. Leo’s approval rating is around 84%.  Obviously, Donald Trump is jealous, so what does he do❓ He goes after the pope and tells him he’s “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” (Maine Writer,🙄 laughable if it were not also pathetic, spoken by a man who thinks he is like god. Lucifer had 👿this same problem. (Book of Revelation 12:7-9 -war in heaven.)

In reality, it would be an understatement to say Trump is not only a convicted criminal, but he’s also terrible for foreign policy. 

Then "Hillbilly" JD Vance, who was also a Marine Corps corporal,  tells the pope that he doesn’t know the gospel❓ That’s like telling Albert Einstein he doesn’t know physics. 

And the "do nothing" Republicans, like Maine's Senator Susan Collins,  in Congress are saying and doing nothing about this Trump incoherence. We’re doomed if the Democrats can’t take over the House and Senate in November.

ICE activities don’t square with ‘worst of the worst’.

Dear Editor: So among the extraordinary litany of Trumpzi-ism's lies, 🤥we were told (and Republican voters believed❗) that the deportations of immigrants was going after the worst of the worst, — real criminals that were in the U.S. illegally. We were told the enforcement was targeted and warrants were issued. That doesn’t square with immigrants being picked up at scheduled immigration hearings. That doesn’t square with people being randomly accosted at gas stations or store parking lots. That doesn’t square with random traffic stops based only on the driver’s skin color. That doesn’t square when off-duty Minneapolis police officers are being stopped by ICE.

I think when they say targeted, they are using a racial profile meaning anyone who looks brown. Anyone with an accent. Even if they are here legally waiting for an asylum or citizenship hearing.

I suggest anyone in Minnesota might find it necessary to carry proof of citizenship and even then might be at risk of detention.

Donald Trump is not qualified under the Constitution to be on the 2024 presidential ballot

Dear EDITOR: A letter espoused the constitutionally misguided argument that only “the people” should decide if Donald Trump is eligible to be elected president, notwithstanding claims that he engaged in insurrection (“Let voters decide,” Dec. 24). 

Article 2 of the Constitution identifies three qualifications to hold the office of president: natural born citizen; 35 years old; and a resident of the U.S. for at least 14 years. In addition, the 14th Amendment declares ineligible for public office any former official who has engaged in insurrection, thus adding a fourth qualification to hold the office of president.

Dear Editor: Are we to believe that voters should have decided that, even though he is not a “natural born” citizen, Arnold Schwarzenegger is nevertheless eligible to be president? 

How about Billie Eilish, who is only 22 years old?

So long as we remain a constitutional republic, disputes about the law must always be decided in court, as was the case of Donald Trump’s bogus claims of election fraud, which were rejected in 62 separate lawsuits around the country.

Vladimir Putin is lurking in the shadow of the Trump candidacy

Seeing no parallel-  Published in the Press Democrat, a newspaper in California Echo opinion letter to the Editor:

There is no parallel between Vladimir Putin jailing his adversaries and Donald Trump being indicted (“Justice as a weapon,” Letters, Aug. 28).

Just when you thought Russia’s love affair with the former U.S. president could not get any more nauseating.

In fact, Putin imprisons his enemies with little or no due process when he isn’t outright murdering them. Trump’s indictments are the result of weeks of testimony before grand juries of Trump’s peers, and that is just the beginning of the due process to which he has a right.

The right person to compare to Putin is Trump himself. Trump is a big Putin fan and has already shown us that he would weaponize our government given half the chance.

Funny how Trump’s supporters do everything but speak to the actual charges in the indictments. Must be because they know they are valid.

It seems like the inappropriate Marjorie Taylor Greene couldn’t contain her anger during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech.

With all the dignity of a spoiled 3-year-old, she showed that, with her on the Homeland Security Committee, not even the president of the United States is safe from her wrath. Other brats joined in.

Some think Taylor Greene is hoping for the vice president spot on a ticket with #TFG ex-president in 2024. She may even imagine giving a State of the Union speech of her own one day. Imagine what hecklers might say during that. With any luck, we won’t find out.

Recently, Greene complained that being a member of Congress has made her life miserable. Many people feel the same way about her caustic impact on those of us who yearn for a politically sane and mainstream America.

Trump’s ‘invisible fist’ will not make anybody great again!

EDITOR: Led by Donald Trump, the Republicans have repeatedly and wrongly attacked Democrats as democratic socialists. 

But this past week, Trump leaped ahead calling for full-blown Soviet-style state socialism! A few days ago, he tweeted: “Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for alternatives to China …” Such core Republican axioms as free enterprise and free markets have been abandoned by Supreme Commander Trump.

Always claiming that he alone can make American great again, Trump has just replaced Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” of competitive market forces with his “invisible fist.”

Where are the Republicans who should be loudly decrying Trump’s embrace of state socialism as he orders American companies to immediately follow his commands? Perhaps those Democrats advocating for more democratic socialism, but not Trump-style command (tyrannical) socialism, aren’t so scary after all.

EDITOR: Having done time as a political flack, I recognize spin when I see it. Trust me, the Republican Party and Donald Trump had their (stupidity!) spin in the can long before Robert Mueller testified in Congress about the Russia interference in the 2016 election. In this case, their spin being (the lies!) “there was no smoking gun” resulting from Mueller’s testimony and “Trump is exonerated.”

Let’s remind ourselves of one central truth: The Mueller report is (indeed!) the smoking gun. Had Mueller submitted 480 blank pages, then one could conclude exoneration had occurred. However, the report was dense with evidence of unethical, unpatriotic and criminal activity uncovered by some of our country’s most experienced investigators.

The result has been the arrest of several of Trump’s closest associates, evidence that Trump accepted aid from one of our country’s adversaries and the ever-veiled Mueller stating that Trump was anything but innocent of obstruction, which continues to this day.

Do not be swayed by the spin. I believe that Mueller’s wearied testimony was his way of saying to elected officials of both parties, “Our democracy is being threatened. Rise above party and do your job.”

EDITOR: Donald Trump’s tweets over the weekend urging duly elected female representatives of color to go back to their “crime-infested places” were inflammatory even by the standards of his hateful rhetoric.

Donald Trump isn’t some drunken bigot having a beer at a bar. 

Unbelievably, Trump is the president of the United States. His words move millions in thought and sometimes action, but he has shown himself perfectly fine with cleaving our society in two.

Moreover, he's been weaponizing his Twitter account for years, but those who find his tweets offensive and dangerous at least should make our voices heard. Email Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter (jack@twitter.com), cite the clear danger you think this leader represents and politely ask Twitter to close his account.
