Florida-based philanthropist and businessman Elliott Broidy, joined by his wife, Robin, speaks with The Baltimore Sun about acquiring for $1.5 million an original 1941, whiteprint of the Auschwitz-Birkenau crematoria, a document that embodies the calculated architecture of genocide during the Holocaust.

The preservation of this whiteprint is more than historical stewardship. It is an act of resistance against denial, distortion and forgetfulness. Primary evidence anchors collective memory, and a healthy democracy depends on shared facts. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What is the historical significance of this original whiteprint❓

Elliott Broidy: This document is the front elevation of the crematoria building at Auschwitz-Birkenau, dated Oct. 24, 1941. It was created by SS architect Walter Dejaco under the direction of commandant Rudolf Höss. It shows the size, scale and smokestack of the structure — the physical infrastructure that would become central to industrialized murder.

This was not spontaneous evil. It was engineered: deliberate, technical, bureaucratic. It reflects the earliest architectural conception of how a prison complex evolved into a mechanized killing site. That precision is what makes it so chilling.

Why did you feel compelled to secure it❓

EB: Only two such documents are known to exist. One was last documented in Russia in 1991. When this surfaced, I believed it needed to be preserved, not hidden or lost to private hands.

It demonstrates the intentionality behind genocide, how ideology became design and design became machinery. It exposes the cold, administrative nature of what occurred. It is proof not only of horror, but of planning.

How did it survive from 1945, until now❓

EB: A rabbi in California received it years ago. It had reportedly been purchased at a neo-Nazi gathering in Germany, without full awareness of its historical weight.

We believe someone originally removed it from an architectural office at Auschwitz and concealed it. Decades later, it resurfaced. When it was examined by a former director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the October 1941, date immediately signaled its importance; it placed the design at a critical early phase of the camp’s transformation.

Did you wrestle with the moral weight of acquiring something so disturbing❓

EB: Yes. Holding it felt like holding something profoundly evil. It gave both of us chills. There was a physical reaction as though we were holding a hot coal.

But preserving it is necessary. Holocaust denial persists. Historical distortion spreads easily in the digital age. This is primary evidence — tangible, undeniable documentation.

Ultimately, we intend for it to reside in a museum, likely Auschwitz-Birkenau, where it can be preserved properly and displayed for education.

You support the Auschwitz Research Center on Hate, Extremism, and Radicalization at the former home of Rudolf Höss. What does transforming that home represent?

Robin Broidy: It is reclamation. That house, once occupied by the commandant overseeing mass murder, now serves as a center confronting extremism.

If this whiteprint was designed there, displaying it at House 88 would carry enormous symbolic weight, turning a place of planning into a place of truth-telling.

It demonstrates how ordinary settings and seemingly ordinary lives can coexist with unimaginable evil. That warning is not confined to the past.

With antisemitism rising globally, are artifacts like this essential proof points❓

EB: Yes. Polls show disturbing gaps in Holocaust knowledge among young people. At the same time, denial and antisemitism are increasing.

Primary-source artifacts confront falsehood with fact. They ground education in documentation rather than narrative. In an era when truth is contested, evidence matters more than ever.

“Never again” is often said. What does meaningful action look like beyond the slogan?

EB: Elie Wiesel once amended the phrase by saying, “Sometimes we must interfere.” Memory alone is not sufficient.

Hatred begins with rhetoric. It spreads through propaganda. It hardens into dehumanization. Left unchecked, it escalates from words to violence to mass murder.

Action means education. It means speaking truth early. It means refusing to normalize extremism.

What conversations have you had with your family about this acquisition❓

RB: We’ve spoken with our children about understanding history and supporting education that combats hate. This is not solely a Jewish issue. It is about preserving moral clarity and democratic values.

We want future generations of all faiths to understand the consequences of indifference and the importance of responsibility.

When history judges this era of rising extremism, what do you hope your philanthropy will have contributed?

EB: Education. Maimonides taught that the highest form of charity is anonymous. Yet sometimes visibility encourages others to act.

If our work inspires even a few people to resist hatred, protect truth, and strengthen interfaith understanding, it will have mattered.

WASHINGTON, DC— A groundswell of voices have come to the same conclusion: Kristi Noem must go.

From Democratic Party leaders to the nation’s leading advocacy organizations to even the most centrist lawmakers in Congress, the calls are mounting for the Homeland Security secretary to step aside after the shooting deaths in Minneapolis of two people who protested deportation policy.

At a defining moment in her tenure, few Republicans are rising to Noem’s defense.

Noem “has, through her words, and I think in her actions — she’s taken a direction that has not been helpful to the situation, and I don’t think that it helps the country," said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

“I think you have a secretary right now that needs to be accountable to the chaos and in some of the tragedy that we have seen,” Murkowski added. “... I voted for her. I think the president needs to look at who he has in place as a secretary of Homeland Security. I would not support her again and I think it probably is time for her to step down.”

Top House Democratic Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Pete Aguilar of California said in a joint statement that “the country is disgusted by what the Department of Homeland Security has done.”

“Kristi Noem should be fired immediately,” the Democrats said, “or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives.”

Republicans and Democrats call for Noem to step down❗

What started as sharp criticism of the Homeland Security secretary, and a longshot move by Democratic lawmakers signing onto impeachment legislation in the Republican-controlled House, has morphed into an inflection point for Noem, who has been the high-profile face of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement regime.

Noem’s brash leadership style and remarks in the aftermath of the shooting deaths of Alex Pretti, R.N., and Renee Good — in which she suggested Pretti “attacked” officers and portrayed the events leading up to Good’s shooting an “act of domestic terrorism” — have been seen as doing irreparable damage, as events on the ground disputed her account.

Her alliance with Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino, who was recalled from the Minnesota operation Monday as border czar Tom Homan took the lead, has left her isolated on Capitol Hill.

“What she’s done in Minnesota should be disqualifying. She should be out of a job,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.

But Donald Trump stands by Noem and praises her work

President Donald Trump defended Noem at multiple junctures, strongly indicating her job does not appear to be in immediate jeopardy.

Asked by reporters as he left the White House on Tuesday for a trip to Iowa whether Noem is going to step down, Trump had a one-word answer: “No.”

Pressed later during an interview on Fox (Fake❗) News if he had confidence in Noem, the president said, “I do.”🙄

“Who closed up the border? She did,” Trump said, “with Tom Homan, with the whole group. I mean, they’ve closed up the border. The border is a tremendous success.”

As Democrats in Congress threaten to shut down the government as they demand restrictions on Trump’s mass deportation agenda, Noem’s future at the department faces serious questions and concerns.

The Republican leadership of the House and Senate committees that oversee Homeland Security have demanded that department officials appear before their panels to answer for the operations that have stunned the nation with their sheer force — including images of children, including a 5-year-old, being plucked from families.

“Obviously this is an inflection point and an opportunity to evaluate and to really assess the policies and procedures and how they are being implemented and put into practice,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, where Noem had been the state’s House representative and governor before joining the administration.

Asked about his own confidence in Noem’s leadership, Thune said, “That’s the president’s judgment call to make.”

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called Noem a “liar” and said she must be fired.

Fighting about DHS funding

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that DHS enforces the laws from Congress, and if lawmakers don’t like those laws, they should change them.

“Too many politicians would rather defend criminals and attack the men and women who are enforcing our laws,” McLaughlin said. “It’s time they focus on protecting the American people, the work this Department is doing every day under Secretary Noem’s leadership.”

The ability of Congress to restrict Homeland Security funding is limited, in large part because the GOP majority already essentially doubled department funding under Trump’s big tax breaks and spending cuts law.

Instead, Democrats are seeking to impose restraints on Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations as part of a routine annual funding package for Homeland, Defense, Health and other departments. Without action this week, those agencies would head toward a shutdown.

To be sure, Homeland Security still has strong defenders in the Congress.

The conservative House Freedom Caucus said Tuesday in a letter to Trump that he should invoke the Insurrection Act, if needed, to quell protests. The group said it would be “ready to take all steps necessary” to keep funds flowing for Trump’s immigration enforcement and removal operations.

On the job for a year, Noem has clashed at times with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, as Republicans and Democrats have sought greater oversight and accounting of the department’s spending and operations.

Noem has kept a low profile since the Saturday press conference following Pretti’s death, though she appeared Sunday on Fox (Fake❗) News.

She doubled down in that interview on criticism of Minnesota officials, but also expressed compassion for Pretti’s family.

“It grieves me to think about what his family is going through but it also grieves me what’s happening to these law enforcement officers every day out in the streets with the violence they face,” she said.
Once rare, impeachments now more common

Impeachment, once a far-flung tool brandished against administration officials, has become increasingly commonplace.

Two years ago, the Republican-led House impeached another Homeland Security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, in protest over the then-Biden administration’s border security and immigration policies that allowed millions of immigrants and asylum seekers to enter the U.S. The Senate dismissed the charges.

Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said if the Republican chairman of the panel, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, does not launch an impeachment probe, he would.

Raskin said he would work with the top Democrats on the Homeland Security and Oversight committees to immediately launch an impeachment inquiry related to the Minnesota deaths and other “lawlessness and corruption that may involve treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

More than 160 House Democrats have signed on to an impeachment resolution from Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill.

Donald Trump tried to wave the MAGA base off the growing clamor to release the full case file of infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, a close friend of Trump’s who evaded trial in 2019 by killing himself in jail. The president’s intervention seemed to reveal that he’s deeply worried there’s embarrassing or incriminating evidence about him in the Justice Department’s files. The furor, he insisted, is being driven by “selfish people” who are trying to hurt him. He said the files must be fabricated “by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration.” Trump’s tirade made it impossible to escape the conclusion that he’s trying to dissuade his voters from believing any damning evidence that may come out.

What was also telling in this defensive screed is how perplexed Trump is over his base’s fixation on this case. 

Trump begs MAGA cult to move on to other conspiracy theories, offering a full menu of alternatives, like JFK’s assassination, Hunter Biden’s laptop and, his personal favorite, the “Rigged and Stolen Election of 2020.” “Let’s keep it that way, and not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about,” he pleaded with his supporters, as if saying that no one cares about Epstein will somehow make it true.

Attorney General Pam Bondi cannot explain her incoherent responses about how she will release the Epstein files. Weird, the memo released by the Department of Justice was not signed by the anyone. Obviously, this entire conspiracy is a massive cover up. MAGA was promised transparency.  Bondi obviously is lying about something. 

But, MAGA continues to care very much about Epstein. At the Turning Point USA conference over the weekend, right-wing pundit Megyn Kelly commanded the crowd to “make some noise if you care about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal,” leading a crescendo of cheers. Co-host Charlie Kirk crowed that “every hand of 7,000 people” went up after he asked the crowd if they cared. Attendees insisted that Trump is “covering for pedophiles.”

Donald Trump's confusion over why this matters to his base is understandable. MAGA voters have made it abundantly clear that they do not care about sexual abuse. They didn’t care when a tape of Trump bragging about sexual assault was released in 2016. They didn’t care when he was found liable for sexual assault by a civil jury in 2023. They don’t mind that Trump goes out of his way to associate with men accused of sex crimes, from Epstein to Vince McMahon to Pete Hegseth to Matt Gaetz and numerous others. For Trump, this has to be bewildering. His supporters do not treat sexual violence like it’s a bad thing. So why do they care about Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, or the identities of his alleged co-conspirators?

The one difference between most of these other allegations and what Epstein did is the age of the victims. Alleged or otherwise, the victims of Trump and most of his buddies were adult women. (The one exception is Gaetz, who was accused of abusing a 17-year-old, and is the rare example of an alleged perpetrator that Trump cut loose.) Epstein, however, abused underage girls. In that narrow space between abuse of adults and pedophilia, the MAGA masses have found their moral absolution. Despite their acceptance of misogynist violence, they still get to be the “good guys” because they draw the line at raping minors. By being very loudly against pedophilia, they can recast themselves as the heroes, ignoring all the other villainous behavior, including their love of a man who boasted about how he grabs unsuspecting women by their genitals.

This is, no doubt, hard for Trump to grasp. He has never shown any sign of having a conscience, and he likely can’t imagine how his supporters might be suppressing feelings of guilt for their complicity in backing a sexual predator. This notion may be a little surprising to some liberals as well. Most of the pundits and politicians we see leading the MAGA movement are shameless people who lie constantly and think nothing of covering up for heinous crimes. But the millions of everyday Trump voters out there aren’t blessed with the deep psychological damage that allows their leaders to carry on with daily acts of depravity. Most likely resort to garden-variety self-delusion to maintain their support.

The Esptein conspiracy theory is a coping mechanism for people enduring this cognitive dissonance. 

Yes, a civil jury found that Trump assaulted journalist E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room. But, if Trump voters tell each other Bill Clinton is on the mythical “Epstein client list” and is about to be arrested for pedophilia, they can believe Democrats are worse.

Yes, Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy keeps promoting anti-vaccine conspiracies that lead to children dying of preventable diseases. But the fantasy that Bill Gates is a child molester allows them to say they’re the ones who are protecting kids. 

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem undermined efforts to help after a flood wiped out a Texas summer camp, but by clamoring for the “Epstein files,” MAGA can pretend they’re the champions of young girls.

To be clear, not everything about Epstein is a conspiracy theory. In fact, Epstein really was a sex trafficker who abused an unfathomable number of girls. There is significant evidence he provided trafficked women and girls to associates, though it’s likely most of the people registered on his private plane’s jet logs were not involved. The Justice Department probably has unreleased files, videos and other documents that implicate people who haven’t been charged with crimes, likely because federal prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to secure a conviction. Epstein conspiracists go way beyond this, however, insisting there’s a “client list” Epstein kept with detailed notes about who he was blackmailing and for what. There is no evidence that such a list exists. (Nor does it make much sense that Epstein would make life so easy for prosecutors.) He was probably not murdered in jail. And until Trump started flipping out and falsely claiming that the “Epstein files” are a forgery, there was no evidence of a White House cover-up.

Trump isn’t the only one who is struggling to understand the emotional needs that the Epstein conspiracy fulfills for his base. David French of the New York Times suggested that MAGA’s obsession with Epstein is merely an expression of “their indictment of America’s so-called ruling class.” The Wall Street Journal editorial board chalked it up to the addiction the MAGA base has to conspiracy theories.

These theories, though, don’t adequately explain why there’s a preoccupation with Epstein and pedophilia in particular. 

If all the base needs is some exciting conspiracy theories to justify a paranoid worldview, then they should be happy to accept one of the alternatives being offered by Trump and his allies: JFK, chemtrails, Hunter Biden’s laptop and COVID-19 conspiracies, to name just a few.

But no, MAGA needs Epstein conspiracies, and the movement will accept no substitute. This craving for moral absolution is why. One of the most defining features of the Trump era has been the culture war over sexual abuse. Republicans have excused a staggering number of allegations against Trump and his allies, which are so numerous that one could write multiple books cataloging all the credible accusations. There was the concurrent #MeToo movement, which helped expose countless predators, including many associated with Trump — and which arguably helped resuscitate the case against Epstein. There has been the backlash to #MeToo, which often paints aggressors as victims of “cancel culture” and the victims as the true bad guys.

In all this back-and-forth, most MAGA voters are on the wrong side of history. They side with the rapists, and harassers and denounce the feminists who are trying to bring perpetrators to justice. Even as more stories of Trump’s abusive behavior toward women come to light, they keep voting for him❗ They’re invested in preserving sexist systems of power.

But, you can’t be a warrior for rape culture, day in and day out, without starting to ask yourself, “Am I the baddie?” 

That’s where Epstein and his imaginary client list come in. By hating on Epstein and fantasizing about political enemies being on the “list,” MAGA gets to play at being the heroes for once. Better yet, they can do so without the risk of bringing actual predators to justice, a precedent they don’t want to establish lest it come for their leaders. After all, Epstein is dead, and his “list” only existed in their fevered imaginations.

Or least, that felt true until Trump started visibly panicking about the Epstein files. But giving up on the Epstein case now that Trump is drenched in flop sweat would amount to MAGA admitting they never cared about pedophiles or justice for victims — that it was always just a fairy tale they told to conceal the ugly truth about themselves, even to themselves.

Trump thought nothing would get in the way of his base’s loyalty to him. But it may be that the one thing that will rattle their faith is this stark reminder that he’s always been the villain, and they are his accomplices.

Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans continue their cruelty campaign against innocent immigrants: Senator Alex Padilla STRONG!

Senator Alex Padilla endured dehumanizing treatment opinion letter to the Santa Cruz Sentinel in California: 

Dear Senator Alex Padilla,

I would like to extend my gratitude for your speaking up against ICE (Immigration and Customs) deportations at the Department of Homeland Security meeting last month with Kristi Noem. I was utterly appalled by the sight of a U.S. senator being roughed up and handcuffed just because you asked a question.

As a fellow person of color, you must realize the ugly truth of racism that underlies this outrageous action: racism against brown people (the darker the worse generally) within a structure of white supremacist imperialism that plagues our lives.

Brown people from Baja to Gaza are victims of colonialism. Hardworking brown folks, undocumented Latino immigrants who represent the undersalaried essential workers of our food and health systems, must juggle imprisonment in their homes with the need to work (for living expenses) with its attendant risk of being swept up by ICE agents (masked like the evil hooded Ku Klux Klan) to horrible detention centers. They are living in uncertain precarity under conditions of occupation.

Another brown people, oppressed by Israel, which the U.S. seems to consider as a 51st state, are the Palestinians, who have been living under conditions of occupation, dispossession, five wars since 1967, this current one aiming to annihilate or expel them, God knows where.

With the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear sites extending the war into the broader Middle East region, the Palestinians, in their 100-year struggle for freedom and rights to their indigenous land against Israeli occupation, seem to be forgotten. Senator Padilla, with your recent experience of being stripped of human dignity, you might feel a sense of the complete loss of dignity, the invisibility, and powerlessness that Palestinians have endured for a century. 

Donald Trump reign of deceit and cruelty against innocent migrants

 One man’s deportation highlights deceit and cruelty of the Trump administration (The Republican newspaper Editorials in Springfield, Massachusetts)

A single – and singularly shocking – immigration case best illustrates three core traits of the Trump administration in full operation: (a) indifference to the law, (b) lying about basic facts and (c) lethal cruelty for its own sake.

On March 12, Kilmar Abego Garcia was driving home from work at a construction job site in Maryland. He had just picked up his 5-year-old autistic son from his mother’s house. He then got pulled over by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A native of El Salvador, he had won a U.S. court case in 2019 that protected him from being deported back to El Salvador.

That ruling was based on the fact that gangs in El Salvador had issued death threats to Garcia and his family if they refused to pay extortion money (“rent”) from the income earned by the family’s stuffed tortilla business. Eventually, Garcia fled to the U.S. and won the court victory protecting him from being sent back to El Salvador.

Today he is locked up in the notorious supermax prison in El Salvador because on March 15, ICE flew him off to El Salvador in spite of the 2019, court ruling that protected him from just such a fate.

That prison is something close to hell on earth, according to detailed reports from Human Rights Watch. The U.S. government is paying El Salvador to detain Mr. Garcia and others in that facility.

In court papers filed March 31, ICE admitted it was aware of the 2019, court ruling when it abducted Garcia from the U.S. on March 15.

But the Trump administration, in those same court papers filed March 31, argues that because Garcia is now outside the U.S. and in custody in El Salvador, the court can’t do anything to remedy the situation.

This heinous set of facts is now before U.S. District Court Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland. Lawyers representing Garcia filed a motion asking the judge to tell the U.S. government to seek his return from the prison. Lawyers for the government have said to the court, in effect, we won’t do anything to remedy the miscarriage of justice because “we don’t have custody or control” of Garcia, which is a perversion of the first order, since ICE illegally removed him in the first instance.

From her podium at the White House, Trump’s press secretary (aka "3D Printer Barbie")- Karoline Leavitt on April 1 lied about Garcia by spuriously accusing him of ties to human trafficking and “vicious” gang violence. This is standard Trump operating procedure when confronted with inconvenient facts: deny, disparage and lie.

For her part, the woman in charge of ICE, Homeland Security (Halloween constumed) Secretary Kristi Noem, went to the supermax prison on March 28, for a hedious op in front of caged prisoners and praised El Salvador’s cooperation. Displaying a total indifference to the law, however, she did nothing to rescue the man – Garcia – that her agency illegally abducted from the U.S. on March 15.

For the sake of Garcia and his family, including his disabled son, and for the sake of the preservation of an independent court system to uphold the rule of law (including the 2019, court victory that Garcia obtained by playing by the rules and submitting his case to a neutral judge), we look forward to this man’s prompt and safe return to the U.S. 

A judge hearing the case in Maryland federal court instructed the U.S. government to bring Garcia back to the U.S. no later than Monday. In response, the Trump administration immediately filed a notice of appeal to fight the judge’s order.

So far, as of May 15, 2025,

 the Trumpzi administration has illegally ignored all court orders.

Donald Trump must be impeached because he is clearly leading a group of incompetent cult followers! SOS! Mayday!

Echo opinion letter published in the Salisbury Post newspaper in North Carolina: 

Let’s review a few of the lowlights of the Trump administration in the recent past. El Trumpo turns the White House lawn into a car lot for the benefit of his top donor. Then Howard Lugnut tells the American people to buy Tesla stock. I don’t and won’t own Tesla stock. Can he tell people to buy stock I do own? If he contacts me, I’ll be happy to give him a list. Then Trump says “they” are talking to China about the idiotic tariffs. When asked who “they” are, he replies, “that’s not important.” 

Then Pete Hogsnot lashes out at an admiral and threatens to hook him to a bleeping polygraph.
