God and President George W. Bush: Why He Did What He Did?
The following news story is from a 2005 BBCNews online posting about God talking to President George W. Bush, instructing him to invade Iraq and Afghanistan:
"President George W Bush told Palestinian ministers that God had told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq - and create a Palestinian State, a new BBC series reveals.
In Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, a major three-part series ... Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003.
President Bush tells Nabil Shaath he was driven by a mission from God: George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan. And I did, and then God would tell me: George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me: Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East. And by God, I'm gonna do it.'"
Wow, how do you argue with God?
Well, it has taken me four years of watching Iraq's failed war policy to figure out God's intention when he shared his special discussion with President George W. Bush.
During my own conversation with God, this is what I learned:
Republicans have frothed at the bit over the opportunity to reverse a half century of Democratic success policies like the reversal of the Great Depression, Social Security, leading our nation to victory after World War II, and the 1966 Medicare Act - covering all senior citizens with health care without regard for their ability to pay. With amazing communications skills, President Ronald Reagan convinced voters that "morning in America" really meant we didn't need to help other people with tax money because charity could do it all.
Republicans needed more of their own like-minded presidents to finally put the nail in the coffin of highly popular Democratic social programs. So, along comes George W. II - to finally close the deal for them. Good-bye Social Security with means testing. Good-bye Medicare with managed care (Medicare Advantage). Good-bye Medicaid - simply don't pay anymore bills and assistance for the poor will just disappear for lack of money.
Except, guess what? God told President George W. Bush to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.
Voila! Now, it appears the destruction of the social agenda, so eagerly awaited by the Republicans, is headed over the cliff, because of the highly unpopular War in Iraq.
This war in Iraq has little, if anything, to do with the world war on terrorism.
Our American electorate finally figured this whole situation out - but God apparently says that defeat in Iraq is not an option.
You go (!) President Bush. Keep on talking to God. Your private discussion with the Almighty put Democrats back into political power. Moreover, guess what? We Democrats want to support the poor - we don't want tax cuts if they mean putting our grandchildren into debt they will never be able to repay. Iraq is a defeated nation, but President George W. Bush defeated his own Republican agenda with his failed presidency.
I hope God has another conversation with President George W. Bush. Please, God, tell him to listen to the people. Tell him to focus on winning the global war on terrorism, while helping the poor innocent people in Iraq - who are largely worse off today then they were under the dictatorship government we Americans defeated.
If God told President George W. Bush to invade Iraq and Afghanastan, then I figure it was because, by so doing, it was the only way to derail the Republican Compassionate Conservative tax cutting and greedy agenda.
What a pity - what a sacrifice. But, as Christians, we can meditate on the enormous sacrifice our God endured by allowing his own son to be crucified as a symbol of his love for us.
Although God speaks to people in different ways, it's not always clear what is actually being said.
Maybe the sacrifice of war was the only way to climb out America's growing greed cycle.
It's clearly time for God to talk to President George W. Bush again - and this time, be crystal clear. We need enlightened war policy, like Winston Churchill during World War II or John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crises. Please God. Talk to President Bush again - but this time, give him a script to read.
